What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?
We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the Simi Valley restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:
Infrared Cameras
Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.
Moisture Meters
We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.
Air Movers
This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.
Ozone Generators
These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.
Xtreme Xtractor
This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.
Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About
Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in Simi Valley, CA, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:
Clean Water Damage
This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.
Gray Water Damage
Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.
Black Water Damage
The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.
If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:
- Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
- Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
- Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.
Our Process for Water Damage Restoration in Simi Valley, CA

At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.
After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.
Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.
- Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
- Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
- Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
- Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

The Simi Valley Family YMCA has formed a new all-volunteer advisory board. Andy Dominguez is board chair.
The Simi YMCA is a branch of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA. The new board will support the mission and goals of the Simi YMCA and the Southeast Ventura County YMCA and function as ambassadors for both.
“The community of Simi Valley and the Simi Valley Family YMCA have been partners in growth, healthy living and quality experiences for many years,” says Dominguez. “This is an exciting time to be an Advisory Board member as we work towards strengthening and extending that partnership.”
The board will assist in the capital campaign for the Simi YMCA’s expansion project scheduled to break ground in 2025. The Y will be adding a full-size gymnasium, an enlarged fitness center, three multipurpose activity rooms, seven individual family locker rooms, an expanded Kids’ Zone child watch center, family recreation lounge and additional parking.
“The Y expansion will better answer the many growing needs of Simi Valley residents and lead to continued high quality and memorable program offerings,” says Dominguez. “At the same time, the Advisory Board will also assist the Y in its annual support campaign, which raises funds that go towards maintaining financial assistance and affordable programming so that all community members can be YMCA members and participate in YMCA programs.” Board members will also help on various task force committees including communication and member engagement.

“The majority of our board members are connected with the Y in some way. But just like any entity that needs to grow and improve, we also have members who have not been associated with the Y before,” says Dominguez. “Both bring great resources to the table with history, new ideas, and old and new connections and resources.”

Four candidates are vying to serve as Simi Valley's mayor on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Incumbent Fred Thomas faces challengers Robert Clarizio, Wayne Hampton Holland III and Michael Shaw. The candidates seek to lead Ventura County's third-largest city with a population of nearly 130,000. Clarizio did not respond to The Star's request for answers.
Unlike City Council candidates who run in separate districts, mayoral candidates run citywide. Simi's mayor serves a two-year term.
Below are responses to The Star's questions in the candidates' own words. They have been edited for clarity and space. City races are nonpartisan, but The Star asked candidates and checked public voter rolls to include party registration information for readers.
Candidates are listed in the order they will appear on the ballot.
Fred Thomas
Occupation: Mayor and owner of two businesses for direct mail marketing and commercial printing
Age: 66

In 150 words or less, what’s your top priority and how do you plan to accomplish it? To continue to improve our roads and infrastructure, maintain a safe city, control growth in a sensible way, all while maintaining a balanced budget and continuing to invest in our reserves and our future. To be willing to sit down with residents and discuss issues with an open mind. To weigh both sides of every issue to make sure the decisions I make are what I truly believe is the best for the entire city.
Michael Shaw
Occupation: Retired owner/operator of an elevator service, repair and construction company
Age: 69
Party registration: Democrat
Education: Courses at Pepperdine University 1973-1978, major in journalism with minor in business administration

In 150 words or less, what’s your top priority and how do you plan to accomplish it? I'm running for Simi Valley Mayor because it's time for an honest change at City Hall. It is time for our elected officials to use some common sense and promote transparency and accountability. It is time for our elected officials to show the courage to vote in accordance with the majority of their constituents. We need increased government transparency, use of common sense principles in our urban planning, utilizing smart growth practices, and greater enforcement of environmental protection. I am committed to being a mayor who listens, who works for his constituents and who fights for the values we hold dear.
Wayne Hampton Holland III
Occupation: Broadway producer and financier
Age: 33
Party registration: Republican
Education: Bachelor of science in finance with a minor in real estate finance and investment from DePaul University
Elected Office and Years in Office: None

In 150 words or less, what’s your top priority and how do you plan to accomplish it? Wildfires too often sweep through Simi Valley and a method to reduce this threat which has seen an increase in popularity is utilizing goats to clear the brush. Key areas would be targeted creating a barrier between the wildfires and structures. This method has consistently and successfully been used to protect the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. We have a beautiful theater in Simi Valley, wonderful programs at all of our schools and a public who engage with and support the arts. Through my Broadway and theater relationships, I intend to enhance the existing programs and develop a New Works program. If there is one area of education that is generally lacking, it is financial literacy. Many choose to avoid it and suffer in the long run. I would develop an auxiliary program to provide students with the basics of finance as well as resources for further education.
