Cape Coral has 400 miles of canals, meaning there’s lots of water. When water fills the canals, it has nowhere else to go besides residential neighborhoods which is why it is best to prepare now.
“Make sure that your residence is secure. Put your storm shutters on, make sure all the loose debris around the house, your patio furniture, get that all secured,” Gunter said.
One: Stay with family and friends. The shelters will get crowded. The only shelter in Cape Coral is Island Coast High School. It is currently open.
Two: Use the cape coral hurricane guide.
“The Cape Coral Hurricane Guide has many resources that are available, and that’s available on our city website, and that provides a number of resources that are in there and helps build that plan, or helps fill in some of those gaps in your plan,” said Ryan Lamb, the Cape Coral Fire Chief & Emergency Management Director.

The worst-hit areas of Cape Coral have transformed from ravaged to revitalized following Hurricane Ian‘s destruction.
The property where the Cape Coral Yacht Club and pool used to sit is now a field of grass two years after the hurricane made landfall in Southwest Florida.
House Down Dolphin Drive in Southwest Cape Coral also finally looks like a home once again.
“Just get drywall and put the drywall back together and paint and all the trim and just the construction process took a while. I still have to do something with the windows,” said Mark Klausner, the owner of the house.
Klausner paid cash for the house in the months after Hurricane Ian, and the storm surge gutted it.
The previous owner of the low-lying older home didn’t want to deal with another event like Ian.
“The silver lining is that I got a great deal on a house that I just had to put some sweat equity into, and I have a vacation home now, right across the street from the river. It’s beautiful,” said Klausner.
Two years later, you can really see the old compared to the new. Right across the street from the home is a brand new house under construction, and what is striking is the new flood codes.
“You can currently look at these houses that are significantly lower. I mean, I don’t know if there’s a couple on that street on the backside that was really low. And then the house next to it, the foundation’s at the window level,” said Ryan Lamb, Cape Coral Emergency Operator Director.
“So, we know that recovery takes time. Last recovery is going to take a significant amount of time, but everybody’s anxious to see that recovery happen and so for the city, getting through and working with FEMA to make sure we maximize our reimbursement and get as much of those dollars back, then building back in the appropriate ways and getting grant funding and other things,” said Lamb.
The city is undertaking other big projects for the revitalization of Cape Coral.
Some of those projects include the Weir Projects, which will help with flooding, the Resilience Hub, which is a recreational center that has turned into a shelter and finding a better way for people to build back better and stay within the National Flood Insurance Program.

The Cape Coral City Council election was decided on Tuesday evening. Five seats were up for grabs, and both incumbents lost their seats.
Laurie Lehmann won District 2, Derrick Donnell won District 3, Jennifer Nelson won District 4, Joseph Kilraine won District 5, and Rachel Kaduk won District 7.
District 2
Sheppard was the incumbent council member for District 2. He was running for his second and final term. Sheppard owns Sheppard Landscape and Palm Source Pine Island, LLC. He has lived in Cape Coral since 1999.
Lehmann is a retired registered nurse who has lived in District 2 since 2004. She has a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting and has been involved in the Save Jaycee Park movement.
District 2 covers Southwest Cape Coral.
District 3
Donnell was a Lee County School District educator and a retired U.S. Marine commissioned officer. He’s also a former Cape Coral City Council member, serving District 7 from 2007 to 2015.
Donnell will now serve District 3, which covers the eastern and middle portion of Cape Coral.
McCormick said that she is a career civil servant who has served for 35 years. During that time, she worked with the Florida Department of Children and Families.
District 4
Nelson is a former Cape Coral City Council member who served in District 4 from 2017-2022. She is currently the Executive Director of Dress for Success Southwest Florida. She has also worked with Goodwill Industries and was the Executive Director for the Uncommon Friends Foundation and the Captiva Erosion Prevention District.
Carr had served in District 4 since December 2023. He was appointed to the vacant seat left by former councilmember Patty Cummings. Carr is a former law enforcement officer who served for 25 years. He was the Director of Professional Standards for the School District of Lee County and the Code Compliance Manager for the City of Cape Coral.
District 5
Kilraine has been a resident of Cape Coral for 20 years. He has almost 50 years of business experience.
Pease is the current Director of Cape Coral Technical College and the co-founder of the “Keep Our Parks and Rec” community group. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Michigan. Kaduk is a Loan Officer at the Sanibel Captiva Community Bank, where she has worked since March 2020. She graduated from Mariner High School and has lived in District 7 her entire life.
Harper owns Edison Mortgage Services and was a partner with the Edison Mortgage group from 2015 to 2020. He has lived in Cape Coral for 30 years and is a volunteer youth sports coach.
District 7 covers northeast Cape Coral.
