North Miami Beach is already bracing for a week of heavy rains in a town that in recent months has been hit hard by flooding from torrential rains.
This Sunday, workers from the public works department delivered 800 sandbags to mitigate potential flood damage.
Residents came to the call of the authorities, who recalled that last June the city was heavily impacted by a storm that left streets flooded and caused at least 14 people to have to be rescued by first responders.
“With a simple rain you already know how all these houses flood, so it is better to receive collaboration and be able to avoid major setbacks and be remodeling anything in the house later,” remarks one resident.
Erika Benitez, spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Fire Department, clarifies that it is “very important to make a plan in case flooding affects your neighborhood. That includes having all the necessary supplies such as non-perishable food, cleaning products and water for several days in case you have to leave your home or services in the area are interrupted.”

Calm but determined, Eric Beck was ready to ride out any blow from Hurricane Milton.
The hurricane is on a track to slam into Florida’s Gulf Coast, potentially near Tampa, late Tuesday or Wednesday, though Gov. Ron DeSantis warned Sunday all Floridians needed to be ready. The governor issued a state of emergency for 35 counties across the state on Saturday and expanded it to 51 counties on Sunday, including Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade.
“This is not a good track for the state of Florida,” he warned in a news conference Sunday. “We’re going to get hit in some way, shape or form.”
“Just don’t get wedded to where the landfall is being predicted right now,” DeSantis warned. “If you are a little bit — 30, 40 miles — north, that does not mean that this storm can’t toggle. If you are further south it doesn’t mean you are not going to get impacts. The cone at this point effectively can bring it almost anywhere on the western Florida peninsula.”
Beck took heed and wasn’t taking chances. He came with his son to a 7-Eleven gas station in Coral Springs to fill up three canisters for the family’s cars. A Michigan transplant, Milton could become his initiation hurricane.
“We’re just figuring it’s going to rain,” he said, but the extra gas is to “be prepared.” It would help “go a little further” if things go badly, he reasoned.
Hurricane Milton formed Sunday over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to quickly intensify as it moves east and northeast, the National Weather Service said.
Heavy rainfall leading to possible flooding is expected across South Florida through much of this week, officials said. A flood watch is in effect for the entire area through Thursday morning and authorities warned of “damaging wind impacts for portions of South Florida from Milton.”
It is still too early to provide specifics on potential impacts and locations, but the general time frame of storm impacts in South Florida would be late Tuesday through Wednesday, the National Weather Service said in a prepared statement.
Broward School officials said they will provide an update on Monday afternoon regarding operations for the remainder of the week.
Jose De La Riva, who owns homes in Pompano Beach and Miami Lakes, was in a Coral Springs Home Depot on Sunday to buy items unrelated to the storm. But he grabbed several cases of bottled water at the last minute after a worker mulled out loud: “Looks like the storm is coming our way.”
“Of course we’re worried,” he said. Next on his to-do list: the supermarket for bread, soup, and ice for the freezer.
The Coast Guard issued a warning Sunday for South Florida’s Port Everglades that sustained gale force winds are anticipated. The current level is known as “whiskey” and coming next is “X-ray” and restrictions will be imposed such as some commercial vessels won’t be allowed to leave the port, a spokesman said Sunday.
That’s level is expected to rise 6 p.m. Sunday, said spokesman Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez. “Conditions are going to be getting worse. It’s a safety protocol.”
National Weather Service Meteorologist Shawn Bhatti said while the storm was on “track making landfall as a major hurricane” between Tampa’s coast and Sarasota, the cone of uncertainty could mean a “possible deviation further south, we can’t rule that out.” Key for South Floridians is to be aware of flash flooding from heavy rainfall, Bhatti said Sunday afternoon.
In the last 24 hours there has been 3-5 inches of rain in Miami-Dade and parts of Broward counties, he said.
“In the next 48 hours, flooding will be the main concern as far as what people need to worry about,” he said.
And “we can’t rule out the potential for a tropical storm warning,” he said. “It’s too early to tell. It’s not unreasonable for that to happen.”
Several cities are already distributing sandbags ahead of the rain, and others taking precaution.
The city of Pompano Beach will distribute sandbags starting at 9 a.m. Monday across the street from Pompano Beach Airpark, 1660 NE 10 St. The sandbags will be prefilled, sealed, and placed into cars. The sandbags are free for Pompano Beach residents, up to 10 bags per household, and proof of residency will be required. The sandbags will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis while supplies last.
In Fort Lauderdale, officials said additional contractor pumps and Vactor trucks are on stand-by. Hallandale Beach scurried to complete routine maintenance of stormwater systems, inspect flood-prone areas, and clear drainage systems to mitigate potential flooding.
In Pembroke Pines, free sandbag distribution began Sunday and will resume from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Pembroke Pines Health Park, 8300 W. Cypress Drive. Proof of city residency is required, and residents are required to fill their own bags. The city will supply sand, bags and shovels and assist the elderly and people with disabilities.
Hollywood is offering sand for residents to fill bags at the following locations: Jefferson Park, 1501 Jefferson St.; Rotary Park, 3150 Taft St.; Driftwood Community Center, 3000 N. 69th Ave.
Residents also can pick up empty bags at the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Administrative office, 1405 S. 28th Ave., from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
North Lauderdale City Manager Mike Sargis said his city gave away two dump trucks of sand, or about 5-8 tons, on Sunday, emptying its supply.
“They want to be prepared in case the worst comes,” he said of his residents.

West Palm Beach-based Kast Construction is the general contractor for Salato. It should be completed by the end of 2026.
The condos will range from 2,106 to 3,354 square feet. Prices start at nearly $2 million. The developer said 40% of the units are pre-sold.
“This significant milestone is a testament to our belief that luxury buyers in Pompano Beach desire a boutique alternative,” stated Dustin Salzano, CFO of U.S. Development. “This intimate building, with four elevators for 40 residences and over 20,000 square feet of amenities, offers intimacy and the feel of single-family living.”
Amenities in Salato will include a pool, spa, a bar, private wine lockers, a dry sauna, steam showers, a massage room, a fitness center, a lounge with a juice bar and an event room with a catering kitchen. The building would feature full-time beach and pool attendants.
Delray Beach-based Randall Stofft Architects designed the project. Douglas Elliman is the lead sales broker for the developer and IMI Worldwide is in charge of marketing the project.
U.S. Development, through affiliate 305 Briny Ave LLC, acquired the property for $9.7 million and later tore down a small apartment building. It launched sales for Salato in early 2023.
There’s been a condo development boom in Pompano Beach in recent years. With a scarcity of available land on the coast in Miami-Dade County, more condo buyers are looking further north and they find that condos in coastal Pompano Beach are significantly less expensive than in Miami-Dade and Fort Lauderdale as well.

POMPANO BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Days after making landfall in the Panhandle, South Floridians are stepping in to help those affected by Helene.
About 400 miles away from South Florida, the videos and images of Hurricane Helene’s aftermath are devastating.
Homes were gone, businesses were destroyed, neighborhoods were flooded, and lives were changed.
A Pompano Beach business owner and philanthropist is mobilizing for our neighbors up north to the hard-hit areas, where local task forces were deployed and this isn’t the first time.
It all started with Hurricane Andrew. Since then he’s collected, donated, and distributed supplies after about a dozen major hurricanes across several states and this time is no different.
“It really took a toll so I said to myself were not going to sit by and not going to help,” said Steven Gurowitz. “It’s heart-wrenching. You can’t sleep for a couple hours.”
Steven Gurowitz, owner of Interiors by Steven G, hosted a donation drive Monday morning and will be taking essentials to the Big Bend area as well as North Carolina, which was hit hard by the flooding.
They will be collecting donations at the company’s warehouse, located at 2818 Centerport Circle in Pompano Beach, through Wednesday, and sending the truckloads of supplies to the heavy-hit areas.
Some of the supplies you can donate include water, batteries, flashlights, tarps, first-aid kits, canned goods, formula, toilet paper, tarps, pet food and diapers.
“We have nine Amazon trucks alone that that will be here. We have clients and friends as far as New York that are federal expressing us things and emailing us gift cards, but so far what we’re hearing is if nothing’s open the gift cards are useless. So, my team at Interiors by Steven G, all the girls they go out shopping, ” said Steven. “I have five trucks we can pick up anywhere in town and we want to make it easy for people.”
He said what Helene left behind is the worst he’s ever seen.
“The span of what this has covered and the devastation and damage that it has done,” said Steven.
This is just one of the many local businesses and organizations that felt inclined to take action and help support the victims of Helene.
“Water is the biggest item that everybody needs cause they can’t bathe and they have nothing to drink. And seeing the impact of this and the range in which it is impacted. Not just the big curve[ The Big Bend], but it impacted the Carolina’s in a major way,” said Steven “So, how do you sit back and just watch?”
Hurricane Helene’s path of destruction stretched across several states including Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Video shared with 7News showed one of Steven’s clients who had to get airlifted out of their home because they were surrounded by rushing floodwaters.
“Yesterday my phone rang literally all day,” said Steven.
Steven hopes what motivates him, will motivate others watching.
“I call it heart. You know how do you sit back?” he said.
He’s certainly not alone, as Feeding South Florida distributed trucks full of food and water for our neighbors up North.
“We’re partnering with our sister food banks in Tampa and Tallahassee to provide them much needed resources, such as water, meals ready to eat,” said Paco Valez with Feeding South Florida.
Veterans of Foreign Wars has organized a drive taking place on Miami Beach.
“If we help our members in northern Florida, they will do the same helping us here down south,” said Jacob Jimenez with VFW.
South Florida Red Cross volunteers have been on the ground for days.
“We have about 900 responders on the ground taking care of about 69 shelters,” said a Red Cross volunteer.
Publix is also helping out big time by donating $1 million towards Hurricane Helene disaster relief.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Florida Task Force 1 continues search and rescue efforts throughout Dixie County, going door-to-door and performing welfare checks to ensure members of the affected communities are keeping safe during the aftermath.
The self-sufficient, 84-member team, comprised of specially trained firefighters, paramedics, physicians, engineers, and search canines, has been canvassing the areas impacted by the disaster.
“The search operation consists of a fast-paced and methodical search to locate anyone who may be in need of help,” said a Florida Task Force 1 service member.
They’re assessing the damage and conducting search and rescue missions in collapsed structures and flood/swift water environments as needed.
Florida Task Force 2 is also hard at work in Taylor County, performing rescues and clearing debris.
As many Big Bend residents are dealing with power outages and utilizing their portable generators to power up their homes, search and rescue teams are reminding residents to exercise caution when using their generators.
Generator exhausts contain carbon monoxide, an odorless, tasteless, and invisible poisonous gas that can be lethal in minutes.

The Panhandle and the Big Bend is in much need after the streets flooded and disastrous winds swept through the area.
