LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — There are some concerns about a potential name change to Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport. In the future, leaders want to call it the Greater Kansas City Regional Airport.

Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas and representatives in that office are calling the name change into question.

Saturday night, Lucas posted on X that his city has exclusively been attached to the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport and the Kansas City International Airport since the beginning of aviation in our region.

“We will work with our friends in Lee’s Summit, the FAA, and our courts to ensure we avoid future confusion about Kansas City and to prevent some of the conflicts and confusion seen in other communities,” part of Lucas’ post said.

Lee’s Summit Airport Manager Joel Arrington talked to FOX4 Monday. He told us he saw Lucas’ post Monday morning.

“No, I don’t, you know,” Arrington said Monday when asked If he had a response to the mayor’s post. “At this point, I don’t, no. He’s entitled to his comments.”

Arrington says the airport he manages doesn’t have commercial flights.

“Commercial flights are all going to go into Kansas City International,” he said. “Our airport primarily services General Aviation Aircraft, and so there is no commercial airport or commercial service into this airport.”

Lucas’ General Counsel Gavriel Schreiber elaborated more Monday afternoon. He says Kansas City will work with Lee’s Summit to make sure it’s not confusing for people in the metro who are looking for the airport.

“I plug something into Google Maps and go where it takes me,” Schreiber said. “I just think that like the mayor said, we need to make sure that we’re thinking through all the possibilities. We’ve got a great brand in Kansas City and with the Kansas City Airport.”

The change still needs the final approval of the Lee’s Summit City Council on October 8 at 6 p.m., but it also needs approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA approval could take more than six months.

Arrington says the airport he manages has grown over the last 10 years. Now, it can house larger airplanes, helping business owners and executives who are traveling into town and driving all over the metro as opposed to just the city proper. That’s part of the reason they’ve called for the name change.

Nearly half of the high school football season is over in Missouri, with a handful of undefeated teams sitting atop the latest rankings.

Kansas City-area powerhouse Lee’s Summit North continues to hold to No. 1 spot, but is being closely trailed by Nixa, Rockhurst, and Cardinal Ritter — all unblemished thus far.

This time next week though, we could see some shakeup across the top 25, as some of the state’s top teams square off this weekend. That list is headlined by Lee’s Summit-Lee’s Summit West, Helias-Rock Bridge, and Joplin-Republic in a battle between two of the state’s perennial powers.

Heading into Week 5, here are the top 25 teams in the Show-Me State.

1. Lee’s Summit North (4-0)The Broncos downed Bentonville (Ark.) 39-24 to remain undefeated and will face No. 14 Blue Springs on Friday night.

2. Nixa (4-0)Nixa rolled past No. 15 Carthage 34-14 and will head to Lebanon next as they look to stay unblemished.

3. Rockhurst (4-0)Rockhurst won its third top-25 matchup of the season by beating Lee’s Summit West 38-17. Up next is a road tilt at Kansas No. 23 Bishop Miege.

4. Cardinal Ritter College Prep (4-0)Ritter cruised past New Orleans St. Augustine 36-20 to improve to 4-0 ahead of a showdown with Lift for Life on Friday night.

5. Christian Brothers College (3-1)The Cadets crushed St. Louis-area rival DeSmet 38-14 on Friday and will now face another local foe, St. Louis University High, this weekend.

6. Blue Springs South (3-1)After a huge win over Lee’s Summit the week before, South dominated Raymore-Peculiar 51-12.

7. Lee’s Summit (3-1)Coming off a tough loss to Blue Springs South, the Tigers responded with a critical 39-33 victory over Liberty North, who sits just outside the top 10 of this week’s rankings.

8. Liberty (3-1)The Blue Jays smoked Park Hill South 42-7 and will get a chance to move to 4-1 on Friday against K.C.-area rival Park Hill.

9. Kearney (4-0)The Bulldogs sit just inside the state’s top 10 after rolling Park Hill 38-17, setting up a big matchup with 3-1 North Kansas City.

10. DeSmet (3-1)The Spartans suffered their first loss of the year to CBC, but will look to get back on track against St. Louis County rival Chaminade this weekend.

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — At their monthly board meeting, the Lee's Summit Housing Authority (LSHA) stated they are in the middle of an investigation spearheaded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

"They had enough complaints to warrant an investigation," said Lisa Dickerson, executive director of the housing authority. "I don't know what happened in March 2019 but they want to start there."

Dickerson joined the agency in November 2023. She said the actions of previous staff are the reason for HUD's involvement.

KSHB 41 reported last month on the executive director's claims that previous staff destroyed documentation.

When KSHB 41 reached out to HUD in August, the department said they received complaints about the LSHA but weren't investigating the agency.

Following the comments at the board meeting from Dickerson, we asked HUD again to confirm any ongoing investigations.

"HUD takes fair housing matters very seriously, working each and every day to enforce the Fair Housing Act and root out discrimination in housing. HUD does not comment on whether reviews or investigations are underway."

They aren't the only federal agency that might be taking a closer look at the housing authority.

Dickerson said during the meeting, they received a letter from the IRS for three years of unfiled tax returns.

KSHB 41 requested that letter from the agency's attorney.

"We have lost our tax [exemption] behind it," she said. "When we tried to use our tax-exempt they said we were no longer...my former deputy said it had been taken away from us."

Lee's Summit Councilman Fred DeMoro questioned who's been handling the 1099 forms for the agency.

LSHA Board Chairman John Hightower Jr. said they will have to find out.

While some residents showed up with complaints about the upkeep of the properties, they also expressed they want the board to find out who is accountable for these issues.

"This didn't happen overnight and I'm sure it's not going to be fixed overnight but I'm asking, where was the board when the taxes weren't done? You all don't keep up with that kind of stuff?" a resident said.

According to the executive director, HUD will be conducting an on-site visit in the next couple of months.
