High Point University Alumna receives Strickland Trailblazer AwardHigh Point University Class of 2024 graduate
HIGH POINT, N.C., Dec. 10, 2024 – High Point University Class of 2024 graduate Emerson Heckler of Mooresville, North Carolina, has been selected to receive the fourth annual Elizabeth Miller Strickland Trailblazer Award.
The Strickland Trailblazer Award was established by Elizabeth Miller Strickland in August 2020 as part of her $12 million gift to HPU. Each year, the award goes to a graduating female student who epitomizes hard work, passion for service, perseverance and determination. The recipient is awarded a $5,000 cash prize to support her transition from undergraduate studies to her next steps as an HPU alumna.
Heckler was among 10 finalists chosen by a committee of members from the Elizabeth Miller Strickland Women’s Leadership Council for the Strickland Trailblazer Award. All the finalists received a monetary award and recognition for their extraordinary accomplishments as community pioneers.
“HPU students never fail to be extraordinary,” said HPU President Nido Qubein. “The Strickland Trailblazer Award nominees exemplify the excellence housed within our esteemed university. Emerson Heckler has shown an inextinguishable enthusiasm for academics, advocacy and service. Her innovation and leadership reflect not only the values of HPU but those of Mrs. Strickland.”
Heckler graduated from HPU on May 4 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and a minor in Psychology. She is now pursuing a Doctor of Medicine at Wake Forest University. Committed to advancing women's health, she aspires to become a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist, dedicated to empowering women to make informed decisions about their health.
"Receiving the Elizabeth Miller Strickland Trailblazer Award has been instrumental in making my education at Wake Forest School of Medicine more accessible, allowing me to dedicate myself to my studies and serving my community fully,” Heckler said. “I am honored to carry forward Mrs. Strickland’s legacy, and I hope to pave the way for future female physicians by leading with resilience, compassion and a commitment to breaking down barriers for women in medicine."
Throughout her undergraduate career, Heckler participated in student life, extracurricular academic activities and research opportunities. Her research played a key role in a groundbreaking project funded by the American Heart Association. Through her efforts, she identified a chemical adjuvant that, when paired with specific antibiotics, eliminated bacteria previously resistant to treatment. This innovative research was published in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and presented at HPU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SuRI) in 2022.
Dr. Matthew Kuennen, associate professor of exercise science, strongly supported Heckler’s nomination for the Trailblazer Award. “She demonstrates a profound commitment to learning. She is an extremely proficient scientific writer and is confident enough to discuss that information with me and other senior academics in the lab. Because of the significant contributions Emerson has made on both manuscripts, she has earned first authorship on one and co-authorship on the other.”
Heckler, a Presidential Scholar and Natural Science Fellow, served as president of the Wanek School of Natural Sciences Student Advisory Board. In this leadership role, she launched a mentorship program to support first-year natural science students. She is also a member of several prestigious academic and leadership societies, including the Order of the Lighted Lamp, the Alpha Epsilon Delta honor society and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Heckler is a three-time recipient of the Quell Survivor Scholarship for suicide prevention advocacy and a two-time Top Junior Neuroscience Scholar.
Heckler serves as an EMT for Forsyth County and leads triage efforts as a volunteer at the High Point Community Clinic. She plans to continue her service by working in medically underserved areas, such as her home county, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. She aspires to continue volunteering at low-income clinics and use her skills as a physician to “bridge the gap in prenatal care for vulnerable populations.”
Heidi Hatfield and Betsy Turner, co-chairs of the Trailblazer committee, said 27 candidates went through a lengthy and rigorous process before Heckler was selected as the award winner because “of the outstanding nature of her many accomplishments and her commitment to blazing a trail for other young women.”
Award guidelines require recipients to donate a portion of their prize to a charitable organization. Heckler selected HORSEpower, an organization committed to improving the well-being of individuals with physical, intellectual and emotional disabilities through therapeutic, educational and recreational equine-assisted activities. HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University men's basketball hosted in-state opponent North Carolina Central University for a mid-week matchup on Tuesday night. After taking an 18-point lead in the first half, the Panthers held on and took the 76-60 win over te Eagles.
Four of the Panthers starting five scored in double figures, led by Kezza Giffa with 24, D'Maurian Williams and Kimani Hamilton with 14 each and Juslin Bodo Bodo with 11, while adding 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Bodo Bodo opened the game in Bodo Bodo fashion with an alley-oop off the pick-and roll to score the Panthers first bucket. Chase Johnston and Giffa expanded the game on the perimeter with threes to make it 8-4 in the first three minutes of the game.

Abdoulaye Thiam entered the game and knocked down a three-pointer and a reverse layup to boost the energy and take a 17-9 lead for the largest margin thus far in the half at the 12:43 mark.

Bodo Bodo was doing work on both ends. He picked up multiple blocks in the first half, throwing one block into the stands and another off the glass to contribute to HPU's defensive stops. High Point stretched its lead back up to 13 at the five minute mark after getting stops on the defensive end and driving in the lane on offense for a chance to knock in a couple free throws.

In the last three minutes of the half, the duo of Williams and Giffa helped High Point gain its largest lead of the game. The two connected on back-to-back three-point plays as Williams got the old school three-point play with an and-one bucket and Giffa cashed in a corner three to make it 39-21 at the half.

In the second half, NCCU stepped up its defensive tempo by applying more pressure, forcing multiple turnovers from the Panthers. In the first five minutes of action, the Eagles cut the game to 12 points.
Three straight possessions under the 13-minute mark helped spark some excitement from the Panthers. Hamilton found Bodo Bodo for another alley-oop dunk, as Williams followed up with a block on the defensive end to lead to a basket for Josh Ibukunoluwa off the high pick and roll.

High Point got caught sleeping on multiple backdoor layups but never let the Eagles cut the game under 12 points in the final 10 minutes of play. Giffa took over and scored nine of his 24 points in the last 10 minutes, helping HPU to the 76-60 win.

NC CENTRAL BENCH
NCCU is looking for their first win of the season after falling to 0-2 in the first week. In the Eagles' last contest, they hosted Gardner-Webb University falling 88-82 on Friday, Nov. 8.
Junior Josh Smith led the way scoring 21 points and five assists off the bench in 23 minutes. He's currently averaging 17.5 points per game. Dionte Johnson caught fire in the second half against the Runnin' Bulldogs scoring 16 points on the day.
The starting five for both games this season was Johnson, juniors Po'Boigh King, Perry Smith Jr. and Kelechi Okworogwo and senior Keishon Porter.
NCCU is ranked 11th in the nation in turnover margin (10.0), 15th in turnovers forced per game (20.00) and 13th in three-point percentage defense (20 percent).
The last time NCCU played High Point was in 2011 as the Eagles dropped the game 82-74. The series between the two is 4-0 with HPU leading.
HIGH POINT BENCH
High Point opened the season 2-0 defeating two HBCUs. The Panthers defeated fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Coppin State University 93-51 on Nov. 6 and followed that performance with an 80-71 victory over Jackson State University on Nov. 9.
In Saturday's contest against JSU, D'Maurian Williams scored 22 points and eight assists to lead HPU. Juslin Bodo Bodo had a game-high 10 boards.
Chase Johnston leads the Panthers in scoring averaging 20.0 points per game to start the year. HPU has five players averaging double-figures: Johnston, Williams, Kezza Giffa, Abdoulaye and Kimani Hamilton.
High Point is second in the nation in effective field goal percentage (68 percent) and 14th in three-point percentage (46.2 percent).

HPU’s Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity Raised a Record $104,000 to Purchase Four Track Chairs for Wounded Veterans.
HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 8, 2024 – High Point University welcomed more than 2,500 veterans, family members and community guests to the Nido and Marianna Qubein Arena and Conference Center today for the 14th Annual Veterans Day Celebration, honoring those men and women who have served our nation.
Grammy Award-winning singer Lee Greenwood, who recently joined HPU’s Access to Innovators program as its Artist in Residence, opened the program with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and sang his patriotic anthem “God Bless the USA” to close the program. During his final song, a bald eagle named Clark soared over the packed crowd made up of veterans from every military branch.
HPU’s Annual Veterans Day Celebration is believed to be the largest of its kind on a college campus. Today, the largest audience in the event’s history filled the Qubein Conference Center and overflowed to the arena’s basketball court.
“We welcome you to this university, wherever you are across this land — from border to border, sea to sea and certainly across the world,” HPU President Nido Qubein said, noting the event was being livestreamed for those individuals who couldn’t attend in-person. “I believe in the future of this country. I believe the American Dream is alive and well. I define it as the achievement of your own goal. I believe that regardless of who is in power in Washington, this country is stronger and better than any one of us. And all of us together can charge the reality of its future in a positive, meaningful, powerful and relevant way.”
Retired U.S. Army four-star Gen. Dan McNeill delivered an inspirational message as one of the event’s featured speakers. A North Carolina native, he served as the commanding officer of the 40-nation International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan following a tour of duty as the commanding general of U.S. Forces Command.
The program also included a complimentary breakfast, a patriotic salute and a recognition of students who are leading initiatives to support veterans. As they do every year, HPU students honored veterans with a celebratory welcome as hundreds of men and women, some in uniform, entered the arena. The veterans received an HPU blanket as a special gift during the event.
“We’ve had many performances around the country, of course, in various places for Veterans Day, large stadiums alike,” Greenwood said. “It’s kind of cool when you have just a moment to step back and honor those people for their military service and who have spent their entire life either in sacrifice and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice in defending the country and its freedom.”
McNeill said it was a humbling experience and an honor to speak on behalf of those brave veterans who have worn the uniforms of America’s armed service.
“Truly you have earned your place in the history of our nation through dedicated commitment and great personal sacrifice,” said McNeill. “By what right do we assemble here today to honor the men and women who now stand in the ranks of our core of military service veterans? It’s simple. The liberties and latitude of the Constitution of the United States of America grant us the right to peaceful assembly and free expression of gratitude. Who has the duty to protect that Constitution? All those who serve the American people have taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
Madison Crowell, a freshman who was accepted to 231 colleges and universities and received nearly $13 million in scholarships, gave the invocation at the start of the program. She prayed God would comfort the families of veterans who lost their lives in the ultimate sacrifice and that He will protect those who are on the front lines in active-duty service, including her father — a U.S. Army sergeant.
“Today, we honor courageous and worthy men and women who are in this room and around the world who have placed their lives on the line so that we may enjoy the freedom and liberties that America guarantees,” she said. “We are grateful for the selflessness they displayed and continue to display in the face of our adversaries.”
American Flags and Track Chairs Donated at Today’s Event
As is tradition at the annual event, HPU donated approximately 100 American flags to local nonprofits, schools and government buildings. In addition, Operation K.A.R.E., a national initiative started by HPU’s Kappa Alpha Order in 2016, raised a record $104,000 to provide Track Chairs for four wounded veterans. Two of the veterans were in attendance to receive their new track chairs.
Founded by Kappa Alpha fraternity members in partnership with The Independence Fund, the initiative has grown to include more than 75 KA chapters across the country. It has raised approximately $2 million to help veterans and their families.
The event also included the Star of Service and Sacrifice for veterans to sign. This is the third 5-foot star that will be displayed on HPU’s campus as a reminder for students of the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom.
Student Government Association President Ben Niehaus, a senior finance major with an accounting minor, said the annual Veterans Day Celebration is his favorite event of the year.
“I have now volunteered for the event each of my four years on campus, and it brightens my day every single time,” said Niehaus, who is from Chattanooga, Tennessee. “It is an honor to meet these men and women that have sacrificed so much for our great country. I love seeing the joy on the faces of our veterans when we greet them and hand them blankets. It is a blessing to attend a university where we value patriotism and continually honor our veterans who are the reason that we can live in a free country.”
The Veterans Day Celebration is also one of the favorite HPU events on campus for SGA Chief of Staff Caitlin Black, a senior from High Point who is in the Honors Scholar Program double majoring in computer science and dance.
“I am so thankful to have been able to volunteer for this event all four years of my time here and am so blessed to help welcome the many veterans onto this beautiful campus, including my grandfather who is a Navy veteran,” Black said. “This event is a great time to be able to give back to those who have given their all for our freedom. I am forever grateful for these men and women who have laid their life on the line so that we all can live the freedoms we so often take for granted and am so thankful to attend a values-based institution that honors these veterans in such a great way. It truly is because of their sacrifices that we live in the world we do today.”
HPU’s Annual Veterans Day Celebration is supported by the Sheriff Family Veterans Awareness Endowment, the MJ Hall and Jay Stobbs Leadership in Military and Veterans Awareness Endowment, David and Luke Greisler, D.H. Griffin Construction and River Landing at Sandy Ridge.
