After detailed safety inspections and bridge cleaning by the Ohio Department of Transportation and coordination with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Interstate 471 North has been reopened to traffic.
Officials announced the reopening of the northbound lanes around 9 p.m. Friday. Along with the mainline I-471 northbound reopening, Kentucky crews reopened the I-471 northbound entrance and exit ramps shortly after.
The Daniel Carter Beard Bridge and both sides of Interstate 471 over the Ohio River were shut down for the morning commute after a massive fire early Friday.
On northbound I-471, only the far-left lane of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge remains closed, according to a statement from ODOT officials. Crews extended this single-lane closure from the bridge to near Memorial Parkway Saturday afternoon. The extension was done for the safety of motorists and construction crews.
Southbound lanes of I-471 remain closed
Southbound I-471 at the bridge crossing will remain closed until further notice. ODOT has expedited an emergency contract with Great Lakes Construction to repair the southbound approach to the bridge that connects Cincinnati to Newport, Kentucky.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead and find an alternate route. Official updates throughout this project can be found at transportation.ohio.gov/471fire, and live traffic updates are available in Kentucky from GoKY and OHGO in Ohio.

How did the Cincinnati bridge fire start?
The blaze began at the Sawyer Point 1000 Hands Playground, which sits underneath the bridge, and was initially reported at 3:20 a.m., Cincinnati Fire Chief Frank McKinley said. The flames reached more than 40 feet and set fires on the bridge as well. Officials said about 60 firefighters were sent to fight the inferno.
“We haven’t ruled anything out,” McKinley said.
He added that the playground was full of wood and synthetic materials causing a fire that likely reached several thousand degrees. The ground was covered in a spongy synthetic mat, according to Rocky Merz at the Cincinnati Parks Department.
The small fires at the playground rekindled throughout the morning. There were open flames at the site as late as 9:30 a.m., about six hours after the initial blaze. McKinley said the fire was extinguished at 11 a.m.
What's the damage to the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge?
The massive fire caused significant damage to the Ohio approach to the bridge, which could take days or weeks to repair and will likely cost millions of dollars, according to Matt Bruning, the Ohio Department of Transportation press secretary.
"At least three beams will need to be replaced on that portion of the structure," Bruning said. A portion of the road deck and a sign truss will also need to be replaced.

ODOT is diverting southbound I-471 traffic from Ohio by way of I-71 and I-75 South. In addition, the following restrictions are in place in Downtown Cincinnati:

Sawyer Point Park is closed for safety reasons following the fire, according to the Cincinnati Parks Department.
The Ohio Gold Cup Tournament will still happen this weekend, Saturday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Sawyer Point pickleball courts, however. The courts are open only to tournament participants.
The courts will be closed to the general public all weekend.

CINCINNATI — Next week’s Ohio high school football regional quarterfinals will certainly include some intriguing matchups unlike most of Friday’s 27 first-round games in Greater Cincinnati.
There was little drama during the first round for several teams.
In Division I, Region 4, top-seeded Moeller defeated Sycamore 63-7. It was the first time Moeller scored 60-plus points in a game since a 68-7 win over Lafayette (Lexington, Ky.) on Sept. 13, 2019.
Moeller (10-1) plays host to Lakota East (8-3) in a regional quarterfinal Nov. 8 at Mount St. Joseph University.
Lakota East defeated visiting West Clermont 42-28 in the first round in the WCPO 9 Friday Football Game of the Week. It was Lakota East's first playoff win since October 2020.
Princeton, the No. 4 seed, defeated visiting No. 13 seed Fairfield 48-7. The Vikings (9-2) play host to Hamilton (9-2) Nov. 8. This is a rematch of the Week 6 Greater Miami Conference game in which Hamilton won 34-0 at Princeton in late September.
Hamilton’s nine wins are the most in a season for the Big Blue since 1997 when the program won 10 games that year, according to Hamilton athletic director Missy Harvey. Hamilton has won eight consecutive games entering next week.
Princeton, which is making its sixth consecutive playoff appearance, has won five consecutive games.
Lakota West, the No. 2 seed, plays host to No. 7 Elder Nov. 8. This is the third consecutive season the Firebirds and Panthers are meeting in the playoffs. It’s the second straight season the teams are meeting in the regional quarterfinal.
Lakota West defeated Walnut Hills 49-0 Friday night. It is the eighth consecutive win for the Firebirds. Elder defeated visiting Mason 28-3. The Panthers improved to 17-0 all-time in the postseason at home, according to Elder Media Production Coordinator Adam Duwel.
Elder is 19-6 in the first round of the playoffs overall in program history.
St. Xavier, the No. 6 seed, plays at No. 3 Winton Woods Nov. 8. Winton Woods defeated Little Miami 35-0. St. X defeated Milford 41-0.
Next week will be the first meeting between St. X and Winton Woods since the 2007 season opener. It will be the first postseason game between the programs since 1998.
In Division I, Region 2, Lebanon defeated visiting Clayton Northmont 42-21 as the Warriors captured their first playoff win since 2002.
Lebanon (6-4), the No. 6 seed, will play host to No. 14 Dublin Coffman (3-8) on Nov. 8. Dublin Coffman defeated No. 3 Galloway Westland 49-42.
In Division II, Region 8, top-seeded Anderson defeated Edgewood 78-7. The Raptors (11-0) play host to Vandalia Butler (9-2) in a regional quarterfinal Nov. 8. Anderson has an 11-0 record for the first time since the 2009 season.
Badin defeated Trotwood-Madison 14-12. Badin (9-2), which moved up from Division III to Division II this past spring, plays host to Mount Healthy (9-2) next week. Mount Healthy defeated Aiken 26-20 Friday night.
La Salle, the No. 2 seed, plays host to Kings. The Lancers defeated Monroe 69-21 Friday night. Kings defeated Withrow 10-0. The Knights have won six consecutive games.
Harrison defeated Troy 43-7. The Wildcats (9-2), which have back-to-back seasons of nine wins, will play at Xenia (10-1) Nov. 8. Harrison is the No. 6 seed while Xenia is the No. 3 seed.
After beating No. 11 seed Celina 35-3, McNicholas (9-2) will face Bellbrook (10-1) Nov. 8 in the Division III, Region 12 regional quarterfinal.

In Division VI, Region 24, St. Bernard-Elmwood Place won its first playoff game in program history with a 54-0 victory over visiting Dayton Christian.

In Division VII, Region 28, Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy defeated Southeastern Local 20-7 Friday night.
The No. 3 seed Lions (8-2) play at Fort Loramie (6-5) Nov. 8. Fort Loramie defeated Ridgemont 49-22.

CINCINNATI — All southbound lanes of I-471 are closed at the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge after a fire engulfed Sawyer Point Park, spreading to and damaging the bridge early Friday morning.
Officials with the Ohio Department of Transportation said Friday night that most northbound lanes have been reopened to traffic, but the southbound side could remain closed for an extended amount of time.
There is a single left lane shut down in the northbound lanes while crews work. KYTC announced Saturday that it's extending this closure further south to promote safety for motorists and crews working. The closure begins at the Memorial Parkway exit (Exit 4).
The Cincinnati Bengals are already encouraging fans to arrive early and expect delays due to portions of I-471 likely remaining closed through Sunday.

Ohio closures:
ODOT is diverting southbound I-471 traffic from Ohio by way of I-71 and I-75 South.
While Pete Rose Way/Riverside Drive is closed under the approach, drivers traveling east on Pete Rose Way may use Eggleston Street. Westbound Riverside Drive traffic will go to U.S. 50.
At this time, we know crews from The Great Lakes Construction Co. have begun work on repairing the bridge. ODOT said at least three steel beams need replacing, as well as the bridge deck and a sign truss. It is unclear how long that could take, but officials said it's "safe to say weeks."
