Thousands of people gather in the heart of the city to witness a signature anchor drop, dancing, live performances, and a spectacular festive atmosphere. The events usually span from 4:30 pm until 1 am. Family-friendly activities take place from 4:30 to 8:30 pm, with the children's countdown at 7 pm. Bands perform from 5:30 to 1 am. The countdown and anchor drop traditionally takes place at midnight.

The festivities usually take place on Southwest Second Street & Southwest Fifth Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale near Esplanade Park, which is a picturesque space situated on New River.

The night kicked off with an intense, high-energy set from opening acts but it was clear that all eyes were on The Devil Wears Prada as the lights dimmed and the band’s silhouette appeared behind a backdrop of swirling lights. The crowd roared in anticipation, and when the opening notes of “Nightfall” rang out, the room erupted. Frontman Mike Hranica immediately commanded attention with his signature guttural growls and melodic cleans, setting the tone for what would be an electrifying performance.

The band wasted no time blending the aggressive breakdowns of their early work with the more refined, atmospheric elements of their newer material. Songs like “Chemical,“ from their latest album Color Decay, were met with loud cheers and singalongs, proving that even newer tracks have become anthems for longtime fans. The balance of heaviness and melody throughout the night was a testament to the band’s growth, and each song felt like a celebration of both their roots and their evolution.

The crowd was an integral part of the show. Revolution Live, known for its intimate atmosphere, was packed to the brim with fans who didn’t hold back. Mosh pits formed almost immediately, and the energy in the room was palpable, with each song sparking a new wave of excitement. The audience’s energy seemed to feed directly into the band, fueling a performance that felt both personal and intense. During “Assistant to the Regional Manager“ and “Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over,“ the crowd’s enthusiasm hit a fever pitch, with fans shouting every word in unison with Hranica.

Visually, the show was stunning. The band’s lighting design matched the tone of each track perfectly, transitioning from dark and moody to vibrant and intense in a split second. The Architecture of Whimsy: Mid-20th-Century Architecture in South Florida is a lexicon examining the quixotic architectural expressions fund on select Mid-20th-Century Modern commercial buildings in South Florida. Showcasing the work of 13 noted architects from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale, Marcus highlights the decorative details and gestures – swooping overhangs, brise soleil, cheese holes and arches and screening – that expressed the era’s shiny optimism and the region’s carefree resort culture. With brief biographies of architects and street maps pinpointing the location of each building, this book offers tourists, architects, history buffs and preservationists a new context and appreciation for these works of art, many of which are endangered. Architecture and photography have been Marcus’ lifelong passions from an early age. While maintaining an architectural studio in South Beach for 24 years prior to moving to Fort Lauderdale, Marcus continued to take photographs of South Florida’s architectural environment. His practice currently specializes in historic preservation consulting. A native of Philadelphia, Marcus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University and a Master of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Area prices rose 2.7 percent over the past 12 months

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach rose 0.6 percent from August to October, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. (See table A.) Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee noted that the bi-monthly all items index increase was largely attributed to increases in the shelter and food indexes. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The all items CPI-U increased 2.7 percent for the 12 months ending in October. (See chart 1 and table A.) The index for all items less food and energy advanced 3.7 percent over the past year. The food index also increased over the last 12 months, up 2.2 percent. In contrast, the energy index fell 9.2 percent over the past year. (See table 1.)

Food

The food index rose 2.5 percent from August to October, primarily due to a 3.3-percent increase in the food at home index. Four of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased from August to October, most notable, other food at home (+8.9 percent) and fruits and vegetables (+7.7 percent). In comparison, the index for food away from home rose 0.8 percent over the same period.

The food index increased 2.2 percent for the 12 months ending in October. The food at home index rose 1.8 percent over the past 12 months, while the index for food away from home increased 3.2 percent over the same period. Four of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased over the past year, led by a 7.9-percent increase in the fruits and vegetables index. In comparison, the index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs declined 3.0 percent over the past year.

Energy

The energy index declined 3.5 percent from August to October. The decline in the energy index was primarily attributed to a 7.1-pecent decline in the gasoline index. The natural gas index also decreased over the two-month period, down 1.7 percent. In contrast, the electricity index rose 1.3 percent over the same period.

The energy index fell 9.2 percent for the 12 months ending in October, led by declines in the gasoline (-8.7 percent) and electricity (-10.5 percent) indexes. The natural gas index also declined over the past year, down 3.7 percent.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.7 percent from August to October. The index for shelter increased 0.9 percent over the bi-monthly period. The indexes for owners’ equivalent rent (+0.4 percent) and rent of primary residence (+0.7 percent) also increased from August to October.

The index for all items less food and energy advanced 3.7 percent for the 12 months ending in October. The shelter index increased 4.8 percent over the last year and was the largest contributor to the total 12-month increase in the all items less food and energy index. The index for owners’ equivalent rose 4.8 percent over the past 12 months as did the index for rent of primary residence.

The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach Consumer Price Index for December 2024 is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Consumer Price Index for Miami is published bi-monthly. The set of components and sub-aggregates published for regional and metropolitan indexes is more limited than at the U.S. city average level; these indexes are byproducts of the national CPI program. Each local index has a much smaller sample size than the national or regional indexes and is, therefore, subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error. As a result, local-area indexes are more volatile than the national or regional indexes. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

Ombelle Residential Condominium, Fort Lauderdale, USA

ODA is responsible for the architecture, interior design, and landscape design for Ombelle, a residential condominium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, comprising two tapered 43-story towers. Ombelle, one of the tallest buildings in the city, will feature 775 residences, 75,000 square feet of amenities, and 11,000 square feet of retail space at its base.

“Ombelle combines the urban vibrancy of downtown Fort Lauderdale with the neighborhood charm of Flagler Village,” said Eran Chen AIA, founder and executive director of ODA. “Every moment in the building offers an experience, inspires a sense of community, and establishes a strong connection to the city and nature – our interior design is deeply inspired by Fort Lauderdale’s rivers and canals.”

The north and south towers are supported by a wide podium surrounded by columns and recessed from the street to open up sidewalk space and create covered plazas. Above the base, the two towers rise skywards, creating more distance between them as they rise to optimize residence views and access to natural light. Ombelle’s podium will also feature a large art mural that spans seven stories and is visible from the street.

The towers’ glass façade is encased by a delicate steel grid, referred to as its exoskeleton, as well as an outer shell of terraces and wrap-around balconies varying in depth, length, and density to give each home a distinct identity. The sculptural façade combined with its structural bend gives Ombelle an accordion-like appearance.

Ombelle’s interiors are inspired by the development’s own architecture and the rivers and canals of Fort Lauderdale. The design team studied the bay at sunrise, midday, and sunset and transformed those observed colors into the vivid color palette for Ombelle. Every interior space incorporates soft organic shapes in fluid forms inspired by the river, such as curved walls and curved recessed lighting, and rigid grid patterns inspired by ODA’s architectural exoskeleton design, from grid ceilings to grid built-ins.

ODA thoughtfully approached the layout of Ombelle, seeking to create a sense of community inspired by Flagler Village, the residential neighborhood adjacent to the building. Opposed to so many residential developments composed of long corridors, ODA ensured that in Ombelle, the elevator would always open to an inviting lounge that inspires connection.

The building’s lobby was designed with porosity in mind. ODA wanted residents to feel connected to the community and public realm, so the firm included two entrances: one that opens to 3rd Avenue and another that provides access to the lively urban plaza. Inside, ODA created different experiences within the space. From the porte-cochère, residents walk into an intimate lobby with the front desk. The adjacent room contains a larger, more open lobby space with greenery, large columns, a sculptural garden, and floor-to-ceiling windows that establish a strong connection to the plaza outdoors. The lobby ceiling takes the shape of both the river and façade, while the wallpaper is inspired by the tide and water.

The amenities reinforce this sense of connection by feeling like their own small neighborhood within Ombelle. Atop the building’s podium, the amenities are split between the towers – one designed for wellness experiences and the other for entertainment. ODA also intended to strengthen residents’ connection to the outdoors by having each space overlook greenery and landscape. Most of the amenities also have an outdoor component; for example, the spa with an outdoor sauna and cold plunge pools. ODA designed the amenity level’s landscape to be more open on the west side and more lush on the east side. Residents also have access to a garden and two pools, both curved to maintain the recurring theme of organic shapes found throughout the building.

The building’s residences are simple yet sophisticated and embrace natural materials and those same fluid shapes and grid patterns found throughout the shared spaces. The Miami-like color palette is bright and fresh. Open layouts with floor-to-ceiling windows allow for plentiful natural light, with chef’s kitchens that feature wood cabinetry and porcelain countertops. ODA brought the grid pattern into the bathrooms through fluted glass doors and linear tiles.
