Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

What is the best internet provider in Allen?
For most Allen addresses, AT&T Fiber is the best internet service provider. As CNET's top provider for 2024, AT&T Fiber offers symmetrical speeds, blazing-fast connectivity and prices starting at $55 per month. These go up to $245 a month for 5,000 megabits per second. If AT&T Fiber is not available at your address, we recommend checking out Spectrum or T-Mobile Home Internet.
Are you searching for the most affordable service or speediest bandwidth in Allen? We've also found those top picks to help make your home internet shopping easier. Astound Broadband is the cheapest ISP in the area, offering download speeds of up to 300 megabits per second for only $20 per month.

How to find internet deals and promotions in Allen
The best internet deals and top promotions in Allen depend on what discounts are available during that period. Most deals are short-lived, but we look frequently for the latest offers.
Allen internet providers, such as Spectrum, Astound Broadband and Rise Broadband, may offer lower introductory pricing or streaming add-ons for a limited time. Others, such as AT&T, Frontier and Verizon, run the same standard pricing year-round.

What’s a good internet speed?
Most internet connection plans can now handle basic productivity and communication tasks. If you're looking for an internet plan that can accommodate video conferencing, streaming video or gaming, you'll have a better experience with a more robust connection. Here's an overview of the recommended minimum download speeds for various applications, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Note that these are only guidelines and that internet speed, service and performance vary by connection type, provider and address.
For more information, refer to our guide on how much internet speed you really need.
How CNET chose the best internet providers in Allen
Internet service providers are numerous and regional. Unlike the latest smartphone, laptop, router or kitchen tool, it’s impractical to personally test every ISP in a given city. What’s our approach? We start by researching the pricing, availability and speed information, drawing on our own historical ISP data, the provider sites and mapping information from the Federal Communications Commission at FCC.gov.
It doesn’t end there: We go to the FCC’s website to check our data and ensure we consider every ISP that provides service in an area. We also input local addresses on provider websites to find specific options for residents. We look at sources, including the American Customer Satisfaction Index and J.D. Power, to evaluate how happy customers are with an ISP’s service. ISP plans and prices are subject to frequent changes; all information provided is accurate as of publication.
Once we have this localized information, we ask three main questions:
The answer to those questions is often layered and complex, but the providers who come closest to “yes” on all three are the ones we recommend. When selecting the cheapest internet service, we look for the plans with the lowest monthly fee, although we also factor in things like price increases, equipment fees and contracts. Choosing the fastest internet service is relatively straightforward. We look at advertised upload and download speeds and consider real-world speed data from sources like Ookla and FCC reports. (Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis.)
To explore our process in more depth, visit our how we test ISPs page.

ALLEN — Since falling to North Crowley in last year’s 6A Division I regional finals, Allen has been vigilant in its pursuit to win the storied program’s sixth state title.
But regardless of what happens in this year’s playoffs, Allen won arguably its biggest district game of the year Friday night at Eagle Stadium. Allen’s 22-7 victory over Prosper (6-2, 5-1 District 6-6A) likely clinched the program its first district championship since 2021 and gave Allen (8-0, 6-0) its first win against Prosper in three seasons.
“I told them before the game started, ‘Y’all are going to have to kill us to take this from us,’” senior running back Micah Ellis said. “We want this bad.”

Ellis’ desire for that win showed in his performance. He led Allen’s rushers with 20 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown against a Prosper program known for staunch run defense. Altogether, Allen racked up 228 yards rushing and 410 yards of total offense.
Senior quarterback Brady Bricker finished 20-of-29 passing for 182 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Donnell Gee, also a senior, recorded 12 catches for 100 yards and a score.

“They battled their hearts out all night long,” Allen coach Lee Wiginton said. “They’ve been doing it all year.”
After being tied 7-7 at halftime, Allen distanced itself from Prosper early in the third quarter. Landon Spriggs’ 4-yard touchdown run and Allen’s successful two-point try made it a one-score game. Gee’s 7-yard touchdown reception from Bricker put the game away with 4:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Allen forced a late Prosper interception and pressured the quarterback all night.
Prosper, ranked seventh in The Dallas Morning News’ 6A area poll, managed 135 yards of offense Friday.
“This was the first time that we’ve been really, really close late in the game,” Wiginton said. “That’s great to see that we could put a drive together, eat some time on the clock. And then find a way defensively to go out there and get a big stop at the end.”
Ellis scored the game’s first touchdown on a 35-yard run with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter. Prosper answered that score about halfway through the second quarter when senior running back Leo Anguiano evaded several tackles for a 41-yard touchdown.
Prosper won the District 5-6A title over Allen in 2023, before the teams moved to 6-6A in 2024 after UIL realignment. Prosper beat Allen 37-36 last year. Allen lost to Prosper 29-24 in 2022 and 28-23 in 2021.
Allen entered the matchup undefeated and will post its first perfect regular season since 2020 if it beats McKinney Boyd next week and Plano East in the regular season finale.
Allen, ranked fifth in The News’ 6A poll, has not won a state championship since 2017. Wiginton hopes to change that.
“Looking up [at the stadium signage] and seeing ‘National Champions’ in ‘14 and ‘17, ‘State Champions’ in five years — it’s talking about the tradition of Allen Eagle football,” Wiginton said. “It’s talking about all that hard work that came and laid the foundation and talking about how we want to make them proud.”
