It was a Friday afternoon, and the hot, northwest Texas sun was beating down on students as they walked to and from classes along the broad Engineering Key at Texas Tech University. A small folding table stood along the way, a lone figure standing near it. A smiling rabbi, black fedora perched on his head, sleeves rolled up in the Texas heat, asked student after student, “Excuse me, are you Jewish?”
Of the more than 40,000 students at Texas Tech this year, some 400 are Jewish. That Friday on the Key, they found a welcome sight.
Chabad had come to Lubbock, Texas.
Rabbi Zalman and Chana Liba Braun moved to Lubbock earlier this year, to serve the needs of Jewish students at Texas Tech as well as the local Jewish community. With a population of 250,000, Lubbock was the largest remaining U.S. city without a Chabad presence.
Lubbock’s Jewish community traces its roots to the early 1900s, when a Jewish couple opened a dry goods store in the then-tiny town along the Santa Fe Railroad. Today, several hundred Jewish people call the city home. Andrea Herrera is one of them.
When the Brauns first visited Lubbock, Herrera and her husband Alex met them for coffee. “We spent an hour and a half kibitzing,” Herrera recalled. “They were trying to decide whether to move here.”
It wasn’t an easy decision. Lubbock is five hours away from the nearest Chabad house, hundreds of miles from the closest kosher supermarket or mikvah. But here was a community excited to welcome a new rabbi and rebbetzin. Here was a college — the sixth-largest in the state — that had never had Jewish infrastructure in its nearly century-long history.
The Brauns visited again, this time on Chanukah. They held a public menorah lighting on campus at Red Raider Plaza, and another at South Plains Mall, where the nascent Chabad center was greeted by Mayor Tray Payne and other public officials.
“It was very well attended, very public—it was wonderful,” Herrera said. “It was then that I began to realize that they were considering moving here.”
The Brauns hit the ground running, with a Purim party, Passover Seders, High Holiday services and Shabbat dinners. Jewish students welcomed the new Jewish presence on campus—eight of whom even joined the annual Chabad on Campus Shabbaton in New York, last week.
Nowadays, Chabad’s table on campus at Texas Tech is becoming a familiar sight, as Jewish pride takes off in northwest Texas.

Liberty Bowl officials and the schools involved announced on Sunday that it'll be Texas Tech (8-4, 6-3 in the Big 12) squaring off against Arkansas (6-6, 3-5 in the Southeastern Conference) at 6 p.m. Dec. 27. ESPN will televise the game.
The Red Raiders will be capping their season at the game in Memphis, Tennessee for the second time in four years. It'll be the second time in three years for the Razorbacks and the seventh visit overall. The Razorbacks lost their first three Liberty Bowl appearances and have won their three most recent.
Tech beat its former coach, Mike Leach, and Mississippi State 34-7 in the 2021 Liberty Bowl, and Arkansas edged Kansas 55-53 in triple overtime a year later.
"Texas Tech is proud to accept its 42nd bowl appearance in school history and return to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl," athletics director Kirby Hocutt said in Tech's announcement. "We look forward to bringing Red Raider nation back to the great city of Memphis to showcase our football program in one of college football’s most-storied bowl games."
Texas Tech football has long history with Arkansas dating to Southwest Conference days
Texas Tech and Arkansas played annually from 1957 through 1991, but have met only twice since the Razorbacks left the Southwest Conference for the SEC after the 1991 season. The two split a home-and-home series, Arkansas winning in Lubbock 49-28 in 2014 and Tech winning in Fayetteville 35-24 in 2015.

The Red Raiders finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big 12 this season, one game behind four teams who tied at the top with 7-2 conference records. Arizona State beat Iowa State 45-19 in the Big 12 championship Saturday in Arlington.
Texas Tech's 2021 triumph in Memphis started a streak of four consecutive bowl appearances for the Red Raiders, who beat Ole Miss 42-25 in the 2022 Texas Bowl and downed California 34-14 in the 2023 Independence Bowl.
Tech went 4-0 during a stretch of four bowl appearances in five seasons from 2009 through 2013, but the Red Raiders have never won bowls four years in a row.
"We are looking forward to bringing the Red Raiders to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl," Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said in Tech's announcement. "This is a tremendous opportunity for our program to possibly reach nine wins and end our season on a strong note against an Arkansas program we respect. We hope to see Red Raider nation take over the city of Memphis and paint Beale Street and the Liberty Bowl in scarlet and black."

Arkansas junior quarterback Taylen Green has passed for 2,813 yards and 13 touchdowns, and senior wide receiver Andrew Armstrong has caught 78 passes for 1,140 yards and one TD. LUBBOCK, Texas — The Lubbock Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to close Hodges Elementary at a special meeting on Wednesday, December 4.
The board also voted to move forward with the consolidation of Overton Elementary School into Rush Elementary School and OL Slaton Middle School into Dunbar College Preparatory Academy and Atkins Middle School.
These changes will be effective for the 2025-26 school year.
Hodges parents will choose where students will go through a survey. Parents of Hodges students can choose for their child to go to Bean, Bayless or divided between Bayless and Roberts. Surveys will be sent to parents via email and are expected to be completed by Sunday at noon to be considered.
The decision to consolidate schools comes as the district works to find solutions to help with a $14-million-dollar budget deficit, lower enrollment in the district and no new funding from the state.
The vote came with a lot of discussion, right up until it was time to vote Wednesday, from parents, students and teachers who didn’t want their schools to close.
“How are we going to explain to our students that they won’t come back to their school next year? How are we going to explain that they will be moved somewhere else, that they won’t return to the teachers that love them so dearly, the teachers that they build relationships with and they won’t get to return back to their favorite afterschool programs?” the music specialist at Hodges Elementary School said during Wednesday’s meeting.
A member of the Future Focus Committe, the group who ultimately made the recommendation to the Board of Trustees about a consolidation plan based on research, discussion and parent feedback, told EverythingLubbock.com they felt the process was rushed.
“We should have known sooner. It shouldn’t have been as rushed. There should have been more transparency. To make this decision tonight, knowing all that, is the wrong decision, in my opinion,” Scott Eberhard, who is also the P.E. teacher at Hodges Elementary school said.
Members on the Board of Trustees even got emotional before the final vote, too. They each shared their condolences with families and some even said they didn’t want the schools to close either, but knew it was necessary for the ultimate success of the district.
“We get how hard it is, but at the end of the day, we’re not doing our jobs if we’re not making sure that students are getting the best experience, the best opportunities,” Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees member at large, Nancy Sharp said.
LISD announced on Monday that Bean and Harwell Elementary Schools were no longer being considered.
Lubbock ISD’s plans to consider combining schools got out in October, stirring up concern from parents of students. The committee said its intentions were to simply discuss the district’s future amid a 14.8-million-dollar budget deficit, no new state funding and declining enrollment rates. However, the LISD Board of Trustees did hear parents, teachers and students out on November 21 at a board meeting where Phase 1 (the 2025-2026 school year) was presented.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - It will soon look a lot like a Miracle on 34th Street here in Lubbock.
Starting Saturday (Dec. 7) at 6 p.m., parade floats will begin at 34th and Avenue Q and make their way down to Indiana Avenue, for the Miracles Christmas Parade. KCBD is the media sponsor of the parade.
Anna Delano with Reliant says she’s looking forward to participating in a different way than in previous years.
“It’s just become a tradition,” Delano said. “I’m so excited to be a part of that now on behalf of Reliant. This is something I’ve taken my kids to for years, and then the opportunity to power the parade became available, and Reliant was so excited to do that. We love the holidays, we love powering the holidays.”
This year’s theme is A Vintage Christmas, a nod to the styles and traditions of Christmas past. Delano and parade co-chair Jeff Resse explain what this holiday means for them.
“Memories, tradition, a renewal of hope,“ Reese said. ”It’s a time of remembering, it’s a time of hope. It’s just a lot of blessings that come with it.“
The Miracles Christmas Parade is also teaming up with the U.S. Marines and Toys for Tots. People will be able to hand an unwrapped toy off to the Marines as they pass by.
“Partnering with those guys was a day-one decision,” Reese said. “The things that they do, the hope that they bring to our community. I mentioned smiles, I just can’t imagine what it would be like for a kid to get up on Christmas morning and not have something.”
The event is free to attend.
“This is something that is a passion of ours, giving back to the community,” Delano said. “We absolutely love the holidays and if we can keep a free event free through our sponsorships and help Lubbock continue to be excited about such events, then we’re always in.”
