Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Wichita Falls City Council has approved a rezoning request for a data center development in Texas.
Located in the north of Wichita Falls, the 227 acres close to Kiel Lane, City View Drive, and the Northwest Freeway will be rezoned from residential to light industrial after the council voted unanimously in favor.
– Google Maps
First reported by Times Record News and Texomas Home Page, the developer - Mark Calvano of Calvano Development - aims to create a hyperscale data center for use by a single tenant, which he suggests would be appropriate for the likes of Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Google, or Amazon.
Wichita Falls is a city, and the county seat of Wichita County, in Nothern Texas. It is close to the border with Oklahoma, between Oklahoma City and Dallas Fort Worth.
The land in question is adjacent to an Oncor facility, a transmission and distribution electric utility in Texas. Calvano noted this was an intentional choice, telling the council "We’re proposing a data center, and a data center can’t go anywhere. It has to go in a specific location. The closer it is to a substation, the better off it is."
The data center planned will be a single-story building up to 45 feet tall, and will also feature battery storage units that cost around $1 million each. Calvano estimates the total project could reach 2.3 million sq ft (213,677 sqm) of data center space.
The battery storage units will enable the facility to use energy from the grid "when it's inexpensive" and sell it back at other times. Calvano added: “When there’s a brownout, these batteries come online. And they sell power back.”
The maximum amount of electricity available to the site is 300MW, unless it is supplemented with onsite solar.
A timeline for development was not offered, by Calvano noted that it would be done in a "phased" approach.
Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce CEO, Ron Kitchens, estimated that the project would bring around $1 billion to the city in taxes, and could require 2,000 workers per million sq ft during the construction phase.
Earlier this year a new build-to-suit (BTS) data center provider announced that it was also seeking to develop in Wichita Falls. DataNovaX is seeking to build on land off I-44 Central E. Freeway and Hwy 287 on Airport Drive next to Sheppard Air Force Base.
Most of Texas' data center market is centered around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. San Antonio, Houston, and Austin also have a notable data center presence.

Advocacy for home health workers and their patients is a huge passion for Chrystal Everett. She’s not just the CEO of Texas-based Wichita Home Health Service, she’s also the immediate past president of the Texas Association for Home Care & Hospice (TAHC&H).
Everett joined the home health profession under Wichita Home Health Service’s founder, Ruth Constant, who opened the business in 1969. Everett said Constant not only mentored her to be a better caregiver, but also taught her the importance of getting involved at the state and federal levels.
“I immediately joined our Texas association, and I got very involved,” she said. “I sat on the political action committee (PAC) for several years, and then I became the president of the committee. We advocated in Austin (Texas) and Washington for all the fields of the industry, be it private duty, Medicare home health, hospice or pediatric therapy.”
In 2022, Everett resigned from her post on the PAC to take up the role of president of TAHC&H. Her term ended this year.
“I learned a lot in two years. It was very heavy on advocacy,” she said. “I expanded my knowledge in the industry. (I’ve) only done Medicare and primary care services (at Wichita Home Health Service). I needed to learn more about my industry, all the different types of private duty and their problems and legislative needs.”
Everett said she championed the work of the government affairs committee and the PAC, ensuring the work of the committees and the association was in line with the rest of the profession.
“We didn’t want to go in (to a meeting with a legislator) with separate asks, when what we’re really trying to do is get a rate increase (for the industry),” she said.
That effort secured a huge win in the Texas state legislature, Everett said, including $2 billion for community care attendant costs and $46 million for private duty nursing.
“These funds are critical to reinforcing the quality and accessibility of homecare and hospice services in Texas,” Everett said. “Notably, this was the first significant increase to the attendant cost area in over a decade. It has been 17 years since the administrative portion of the rate has received an increase. TAHC&H is still advocating for this and will continue our advocacy next session.”
In addition to championing the industry, Everett champions her team, ensuring they have every resource available to not only do their jobs, but also to advance in their careers.
“I look at my staff, and their achievements are what make me happy,” she said. “I’m the softball mom in the stands when they make an improvement with a patient. I’ve watched some of my employees go from LVN to RN or RN to nurse practitioner, pursuing their wants in life and bettering their families. That’s a good feeling to watch and be able to mentor them to do that.” Everett wants to keep Constant’s dream and business alive for many years to come. Wichita Home Health Service just completed a merger with LTM Group, which will expand the agency’s reach beyond the Texas border.
“From a small agency point of view, we know our patients; we know our people,” Everett said. “We’ve served them for generations. We’ve had so many people that we’ve taken care of their grandparents or their moms or their dads, and now it’s our turn to take care of them. That’s something special, that a hometown agency and a small agency can give that back to the community.”
HomeCare staff Juliana Frederick, Meg Herndon and Hannah Wolfson were joined by writers Kristin Carroll and Michelle Love to tell these stories.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) -The Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce announced that a new Amazon facility is coming to Wichita Falls.
“Amazon came to us and said they just kind of started looking around if Wichita Falls would be a good fit for them. We looked at a couple different sites before they landed on the one that they landed on,” Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce partner Moriah Williams said.
Williams said the new last-mile Amazon facility started with a future-minded move by the city decades ago.
“We’re super thankful that almost 25 years ago they had the idea to buy the land for the business park and build a business park. So we were lucky that we had the land available because speed to market was essential for them and if they could not get the land squared away quick enough then we would not have been a contender and they would have moved on down the road. So, because we had an amazing industrial park ready to go with land ready to break ground and the infrastructure in place that was key in making it a success,” Williams said.
With Amazon investing $20 million into the 28-acre project, Mayor Short says the city’s diligence was enough to win the online giant’s business.
“There’s no incentive from the city. There’s no abatement. We got to, you know, take them to lunch. Got to get to know them and start to build that relationship and then this is a place that they really want to be,” Mayor Short said.
As Wichita Falls officials continue to express their gratitude for this investment, they believe this will continue to make Wichita Falls an attractive place to call home.
“A $20 million investment in Wichita Falls, Texas with 100-plus jobs and more to come is a great investment. It’s a great encouragement. It’s a great morale boost for our city. We’ve said often that you know it’s our turn and it legitimately is our turn. When a business of this caliber decides to move here it helps everybody and we’re very proud of that and we celebrate the fact that they’re coming here,” Short said.
In just a few days, construction to finish Production Boulevard, a road that will run in front of the facility, will begin.
After that, the construction on the Amazon warehouse will begin.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - Following the Texas Senate Debate, Senator Ted Cruz made a pit stop Wednesday in Wichita Falls and received a good amount of support.
Over 300 supporters of Ted Cruz attended this rally in Wichita Falls.
After the rally, we had the chance to speak with Senator Cruz about the debate, and what he wants Texas to keep in mind as they head to the polls.
“The Bill of Rights is worth the defending, Texas is worth defending, the Constitution is worth defending,” Cruz chanted at his rally.
Following a monumental night for Texans on both sides of the aisles in the State Senate Debate, Senator Cruz believes he’s best suited for the seat.
“So, the real purpose of the debate last night was to lay out his record and my record because they are very very different,” Cruz said.
“High taxes and high regulations will hammer the living daylights out of small businesses. Well, guess what, that’s what Allred’s agenda,” Cruz told supporters.
“We keep the jobs in Texas by making this an environment where small businesses prosper. That’s what I’ve done for 12 years in the Senate. Being a champion of small businesses, a champion of jobs, a champion of farmers and ranchers, and a champion of continuing to keep Texas, Texas.” He stated.
Cruz said he has a tally of success as the state’s senate.
“I’ve spent 12 years fighting for freedom. Our basic constitutional rights, speech religious liberty, the Second Amendment. And I’ve spent 12 years fighting for security, supporting law enforcement, and fighting to secure the border. Those are the common sense values of Texans. Congressman Allred’s record on all those issues is all wrong.” He explained.
At their only debate, the two sparred over immigration, abortion, and transgender rights.
Cruz cast Allred as “radical and extreme”.
“It is a radical agenda. Look it is so radical, we had a lot of discussion on this last night. Now, Allred has locally supported having boys compete in girls' sports” Cruz said.
“He voted with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris 100 percent of the time, Collin Allred is Kamala Harris, and those are not the values of the people of Texas.” He said.
As Texans head to the polls, he wants voters to keep Texas in mind.
“This is a fundamental choice and this is really about a choice to keep Texas, Texas. Look, there’s an awful lot that is going on right in the state of Texas. There’s a reason why thousands of people a day move to Texas. The number one reason is Texas is where the jobs are.” He said.
Early voting begins October 21 and election day is November 5 for information on polling locations click here.
