Lilly manufacturing $3B expansion planned

Gov. Tony Evers joined Eli Lilly and Company officials on Thursday, Dec. 5 for a news conference related to the company’s manufacturing facility it acquired earlier this year.

Lilly announced on Thursday, Dec. 5 a $3 billion expansion of its Kenosha County manufacturing facility the company acquired earlier this year.

According to Lilly, this "investment will extend the company's global parenteral (injectable) product manufacturing network, helping to meet the growing demand for its diabetes, obesity and future pipeline medicines across therapeutic areas." The drugs in question include Mounjaro and Zepbound. Those drugs brought in a combined $4.4 billion in sales for Lilly in this year’s third quarter.

Lilly expects to add 750 highly skilled jobs to the current 100-plus workforce at this location.

The company plans to start construction on the expansion next year. Lilly plans to use advanced automation, including guided vehicles, robotics and production equipment, to accelerate medicine production. New skilled jobs at the site will also include operators, technicians, engineers and scientists – in addition to more than 2,000 construction jobs during the expansion project's construction.

Officials say the acquisition, expansion, and additional purchases of land and the adjacent warehouse bring Lilly's total planned investment in Wisconsin to $4 billion. The expanded facility will focus on manufacturing injectable medicines, device assembly and packaging for medicines across multiple therapeutic areas.

The news release says Lilly aims to advance innovation in pharmaceutical manufacturing by fostering partnerships with local higher education institutions and supporting various community initiatives in Wisconsin.

These days, with its revenue booming and a market cap swelling to twice the size of any other pharma company in the U.S., Eli Lilly is doing everything in a big way.

One piece of the puzzle that didn’t seem to fit for the Indianapolis drugmaker came in April when it spent a mere $100 million to purchase a manufacturing facility in Kenosha, Wisconsin, from Nexus Pharmaceuticals. Now, eight months later, Lilly has made sense of its move in the Badger state, upping its ante there with another prodigious investment.

Lilly said Thursday that it will plunk down $3 billion to expand the plant into a massive complex that will produce injectable treatments, including its top-selling diabetes and obesity drugs. Additionally, the plant will perform device assembly and packaging of medicines across “multiple therapeutic areas,” Lilly said.

Construction begins next year on the 84,000-square-foot facility, which will house an additional 750 staffers on top of the staff of 100 currently employed at the plant. New jobs at the factory will include operators, technicians, engineers and scientists. Lilly expects the project also will employ more than 2,000 construction workers.

“Today’s announcement represents our single largest U.S. manufacturing investment outside our home state of Indiana and will add to our ability to expand capacity to make both our existing and future pipeline of medicines,” Edgardo Hernandez, president of Lilly’s manufacturing operations, said in a release.

Lilly announced the investment Thursday afternoon in Kenosha with a press conference that included CEO David Ricks and local government and business leaders.

The facility will feature advanced automation including guided vehicles, robotics and production equipment, Lilly said. Digital automation will be embedded throughout the site to accelerate processes and increase accuracy, the company added.

The investment comes on top of another related purchase the company made a month ago of a vacant, newly built, 324,000-square-foot industrial building on 31 acres in Kenosha for $40.8 million.

The acquisitions, expansion of facilities and additional purchases of land bring Lilly’s total investment in Wisconsin to $4 billion, the company said. It added that since 2020, it has designated more than $23 billion to expand its manufacturing capacity worldwide.

In October, the company revealed a $4.5 billion investment in an R&D and manufacturing facility in Indiana which it has dubbed the Lilly Medicine Foundry. The complex will add to the massive project Lilly is constructing in Lebanon, Indiana. The company already had committed $9 billion to build an active pharmaceutical ingredient plant at the sprawling site that will produce its injected blockbuster diabetes and obesity drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Also in the works is a $1.7 billion plant under construction in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, which the company expects to become operational in 2027.

High-flying Eli Lilly pushes more chips forward with $4.5B 'Medicine Foundry' project

In September, Lilly revealed it was investing $1.8 billion to expand production capacity at two plants in Ireland. Lilly also has a $2.5 billion plant under construction in Alzey, Germany, which is expected to begin production in 2027.

The company is rapidly expanding its capacity to meet the growing demand for Mounjaro and Zepbound. The blood-sugar-modulating drugs combined for sales of $4.4 billion in the third quarter, compared to the $6.8 billion Lilly’s rival Novo Nordisk reported for sales of its counterpart treatments Ozempic and Wegovy.

Eli Lilly and Co. on Thursday unveiled a $3 billion expansion of its facility in the Kenosha County.

The announcement marked one of the biggest business developments in southeastern Wisconsin for the year.

For Lilly, the planned development represents the biggest investment the company is making outside of its home state of Indiana.

What is Eli Lilly and Company?

Eli Lilly and Company, often referred to as Lilly, is based in Indianapolis. The company is more than 150 years old, and it develops pharmaceutical products.

Some of the product the company develops addresses issues associated with obesity, diabetes, pain, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

What is the project in Kenosha County?

In April, Lilly bought a facility in Pleasant Prairie from Nexus Pharmaceuticals, LLC. That facility currently has roughly 100 Lilly employees working at the facility.

Lilly has since bought adjacent land in the village of Bristol, just a few hundred yards from the facility in Pleasant Prairie, where it plans to build a facility.

According to the company, both buildings and development will represent about $4 billion of investment from Lilly in it’s facilities in Kenosha County.

How many people will be employed at the new Lilly facility?

The company says 750 people will be hired to work at the facility. Roughly half of those employees will need a four-year college degree to fill the positions. The other half can be filled with employees with a two-year or high school degree.

During construction, Lilly plans to recruit potential employees for the facility so when it opens it can be staffed up and ready to start production.

The company is planning on having roughly 850 people employed at its facilities in Kenosha County once things are up and running.

What will this new facility be making?

This facility plans to focus on products that address diabetes and obesity. Specifically it’s drugs Zepbound, which addresses obesity, and Mounjaro, which treats diabetes.

When will construction begin?

Construction is planned to start in 2025 and contribute to about 2,000 jobs in the process. The shell of the building plans to be complete within the first full year. In total, the construction plans to take about three years to complete.

Will taxpayers be paying anything for this facility?

Yes. Both Gov. Tony Evers and Lilly officials have confirmed that an economic incentive package will be connected to this project.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. is the agency that is negotiating with the company. The details of the package have not been revealed yet but Evers said on Thursday those details should be coming soon.
