Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

The former president will speak in Macon for the first time since 2020. He previously visited in 2015 and 2018. Here's everything you'll need to know.
MACON, Ga. — Former president Donald Trump is making a return to Macon since his previous campaign appearance in 2020.
Trump, who spoke in Bibb County in at least 2015, 2018 and 2020, will be making his fourth visit in nearly a decade.
As he descends onto Macon, like any major event, plenty of roads will be congested and backed up, and attendees will have to follow certain rules to get in quickly and safely.
13WMAZ has collected as much information as possible to let rally attendees or just passersby know what to expect ahead of one of Trump's final pushes before election day on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office said that no roads will be closed for the rally, but that doesn't mean there aren't areas to avoid.
Mercer University Drive will likely be backed up due to the cars entering the Macon Mall and amphitheater parking lot. Eisenhower Parkway may also be backed up for similar reasons. Other streets to possibly avoid include Bloomfield Drive, Brad Walsh Parkway and other roads turning onto Mercer University Drive, like Anthony and Columbus Road.
Additionally, Georgia 511 continues to show heavy construction on I-475. If heading to or from the rally, best to avoid that area.
Anyone still interested in attending the event can still register for tickets at this link here while they're still available. They are free of charge.
Doors at the event will open at 2:30 p.m. and will have a collection of speakers before Trump takes the stage around 6:30 p.m.
Those attending can use general parking, which is located on the southern lot located at Eisenhower Parkway and Macon Tech Drive. There is also a specific parking map on the amphitheater's website that can be accessed here.
For those looking for public transportation, Macon-Bibb Transit Authority will offer bus routes that will drop you off near the amphitheater. For a full list of their schedules, you can check here.
While the Atrium Health Amphitheater uses a clear bag policy, Trump's rally's in the past have stated that no bags of any kind are allowed.
Backpacks, purses, camera bags, binoculars cases, fanny packs, diaper bags and patterned clear bags are not allowed.
Unless specifically given clearance, the amphitheater said that cameras with professional lenses larger than four inches or other video and audio equipment are not allowed. Outside food and beverages, bottle cans and coolers, or various outside promotional materials are not allowed.
Other items like laser pointers, aerosol cans, noisemakers and balloons are also not allowed. Illegal drugs, weapons, or firearms are also prohibited by the amphitheater. If trying to stay cool, a handheld fan is always a good thing to bring, or a hat and some sunglasses. However, large umbrellas, specifically anything longer than 18 inches when fully collapsed are not allowed.
We at 13WMAZ recommend dressing appropriately for the weather and remaining hydrated before heading to the event to prevent getting ill while waiting in line.
Unable to be there in person? Check out the 13WMAZ+ app or right on our website at 13wmaz.com for a full live stream of the conference.
