Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

OCONOMOWOC — Card collecting — be it baseball, football or Pokémon — has been a favorite pastime among kids and adults for decades and recently saw a resurgence during the pandemic.
In fact, according to eBay, sales of trading cards grew by 142% from 2019 to 2020. Arena Club, an online company that offers card grading for collectors, reports sports card collecting is expected to increase from $12.62 billion in 2024 to $23.08 billion by 2031.
At 5 Star Cards in Oconomowoc, customers can sell the binder of cards they have tucked away in the attic, purchase their favorite player’s rookie card or have a treasured card graded. New cards are also available for purchase. There are hundreds of new and vintage single cards on display for sale at any given time at 5 Star Cards.
Owner Matt Sellers said he has operated an online consignment sports card business for four years and has been an intermediary to have cards graded for clients for about five years.
He likes to say he helps people "turn their cardboard into cash."
Sellers said he operates Wisconsin’s largest eBay consignment company dealing in sports cards, gaming cards and related memorabilia.
A Hartland native, Sellers said he has had the dream for about 38 years since he was about 7 or 8, of owning his own card shop. As a kid, he primarily collected baseball and football cards with some basketball mixed in. Baseball cards, according to Arena Club remain highly popular among collectors and are expected to make up 61.59% of the card collecting market by 2030.
For Sellers, owning a card shop is about the customers, and for card collectors, it’s often about finding the standout card.

"Just the joy it brings people when they bring up the (sought-after player) when they open up a pack," he said. "It’s about the thrill of the chase."
Sellers said card collecting remains so popular because it is a tangible connection to a player and a team.
In addition to sports cards, 5 Star Cards also sells Pokémon cards, which appeals to kids and adults. For adults, Sellers says, the cards may take them back to their own childhood while kids are playing the video game and card game with friends.
"One reason people may prefer (collecting) Pokémon cards is that Charizard isn’t going to break his leg tomorrow," Seller said of one of the most famous Pokémon. Plus, Sellers said, it helps that Pokémon cards can be used for a game as opposed to traditional sports cards.
As 5 Star Cards gets settled into its storefront, Sellers wants people to check out the business.
"I have reasonable, fair prices on everything from Pokémon to sports cards. We are a family-owned and -run business. My wife and two children work with me, as well as I have three people work with me who have been with me for over four years," he said.
A grand opening is planned for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, during which 10 people will receive $100 gift cards for the shop. There will also be free hot dogs, brats, soda and other giveaways.
In the future, Sellers may host trade nights and other promotional nights.
