Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia's Asa Newell has been selected as the SEC's Freshman of the Week in men's basketball, the league office in Birmingham, Alabama, announced on Monday. Newell has been named the league's Freshman of the Week twice in five weeks this season.

Newell, a 6-11, 220-pound freshman from Destin, Fla., posted game-high tallies of 20 points and 11 rebounds in Georgia's 69-48 win over Notre Dame last Tuesday in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Newell's efforts represented his second 20-point outing and second double-double in eight games this season. He also matched his season high with two assists in the victory.

Newell helped Georgia seize control of the contest late in the first half against Notre Dame. He scored 11 points over the final 5:45 of the period as the Bulldogs' pushed their lead from five points to 12 at the intermission. After the Fighting Irish pulled within 47-41, Newell scored nine points to lead Georgia on a 22-7 surge the rest of the game.

Newell leads Georgia in scoring (15.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.7) rpg. Among SEC statistical leaders, he enters this week ranked No. 14 in both scoring and rebounding, as well as No. 4 in field goal percentage (.555) and No. 12 in blocked shots (1.22 bpg).

Newell was also tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week on Nov. 18 after he averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 assists in wins over Georgia Tech and North Florida. Newell is one of 10 Bulldogs who have earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors a combined 15 times since the award's inception in 1988. He is the first Georgia player to claim the accolade multiple times since Anthony Edwards earned four certificates during the 2019-20 campaign.

Georgia is currently 8-1 on the season, matching the Bulldogs' best start since also going 8-1 to begin the 2006-07 season. Georgia is currently No. 22 in the NCAA's NET rankings and was projected as a No. 10 seed in last week's edition of ESPN.com's Bracketology.

The Bulldogs will return to action this Saturday when they face Grand Canyon, an NCAA Tournament team three of the last four years, at 6:00 p.m. in Holiday Hoopsgiving at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Hoopsgiving is triple header also featuring Auburn vs. Ohio State at 1:00 and Florida vs. Arizona State at 3:30.

Georgia will then return to Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday, Dec. 19 to face Buffalo at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs will wrap up non-conference play with Sunday games against Charleston Southern on Dec. 22 and S.C. State on Dec. 29. Georgia is riding a 24-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents.

The College Football Playoff rankings, version 5.0, was released Tuesday night.

Georgia football moved up two spots to No. 5 after its eight overtime win over Georgia Tech Friday night.

At this point, with only the SEC Championship game still remaining for the Bulldogs, it seems to boil down to a couple of ways things could shake out when the final rankings and the CFP bracket is unveiled on Sunday.

Georgia will get a first-round bye by beating Texas on Saturday and should be the No. 2 seed then.

A loss isn’t expected to cost the Bulldogs a spot in the playoff, but would drop them down to a first-round game either at home or away.

While three-loss SEC teams that aren’t playing this weekend were lobbying for why they should get in the playoff, the Bulldogs and 11-1 Texas haven’t had to bang that drum.

Latest CFP rankings

Here are the top 12 teams in the fourth reveal:

No. 1 Oregon

No. 2 Texas

No. 3 Penn State

No. 12 Miami

Georgia’s projected CFP opponent

Georgia would be the No. 7 seed and play No. 10 Indiana in a first-round game in Athens.

College Football Playoff bracket: Who’s in, who’s out

The first-round matchups would be: No. 5 Penn State vs. No. 12 Arizona State , No. 6 Notre Dame vs. No. 11 Alabama, No. 7 Georgia vs. No. 10 Indiana, No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 9 Tennessee. The first-round byes are No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 SMU and No. 4 Boise State.

Teams on the outside of the bracket this week include No. 12 Miami, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 14 South Carolina and No. 15 Arizona State

How many teams in College Football Playoff 2024?

The playoff has expanded from a four-team to 12-team field. The four highest ranked conference champions receive byes and the fifth-highest ranked conference champion is slotted where it is ranked in or placed at No. 12 of lower. Ohio State is the No. 5 seed because it is the second-ranked Big Ten team.

When next College Football Playoff rankings come out

The final CFP rankings will be revealed during the top 25 rankings show on Sunday Dec. 8 at 12 p.m. on ESPN.
