Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Historic church holds service after fire

The First Pentecostal Church of Buford held a worship service on Sunday despite their historic building burning the night of Thanksgiving. They were able to hold the program in the neighboring Buford Church of God building, which they say was graciously offered to them.

The Brief

BUFORD, Ga. - Other churches in Buford have opened their doors to the First Pentecostal Church of Buford after a raging fire swept through their building on Thanksgiving.

The Buford Church of God hosted the Pentecostal congregation at their building Sunday.

Members filled the sanctuary with song and praise, but the images from Thanksgiving night were still burned into their memory.

"It was just so significant to see the steeple and the cross and all that just collapse into the sanctuary and blazing fire. That was devastating for sure," said Brad Mayer, ministry coordinator for First Pentecostal.

Fire investigators said they don’t suspect arson, but are working to figure out what caused the inferno that collapsed the roof and steeple of the historic church.

No one was injured, and Pastor of First Pentecostal Jordan Copeland considers that to be a miracle.

He said they usually have bible study on Thursday nights.

However, due to the holiday, the building was practically empty.

"It would have added a whole different element having to have the firefighters run through the building and sweep the building of people. I can't imagine it would have turned out the same," Copeland said.

He said the few people who were in the building were able to get out just in the nick of time.

"Three of our young men were in the building and tried to fight the fire, and escaped just two minutes before the roof came down. I absolutely consider that to be the hand of God protecting us," Copeland said.

Gwinnett County church fire under investigation

It's unclear exactly what caused the fire, but officials say they do not suspect foul play.

He said his father was the Pastor of the Church for 30 years. Unfortunately, they lost some of his old belongings in the fire.

"The fireball was 40 feet off the top of the roof at one point. [He] passed away last year from dementia, and I'm thankful that he did not have to see that building burn that way," Copeland said.

He said the outpouring of support from the Buford community has been overwhelming.

"We have had upwards of ten local pastors offer their churches," Copeland said.

On Sunday, Copeland used the fire as a way to encourage his members, and even titled his sermon "Living in the Fire."

He cited some of the many examples from the Bible of people’s faith being tested by fire, and told his congregation they were no different.

Copeland said they have an important meeting with their insurance company on Monday to assess whether they can rebuild or whether they will have to find a new permanent home.

ATLANTA – Someone in Georgia woke up this morning as a new multimillionaire and the largest ever Georgia Lottery winner. A single Powerball ticket purchased in Buford matched all six numbers drawn last night to win a jackpot worth $478.2 million. The jackpot has a cash value of $230.6 million.

Quick Mart, located at 2155 Buford Dam Road in Buford, sold the lucky Quik Pik ticket.

“We are thrilled to congratulate Georgia’s newest Powerball jackpot winner, who happens to be the largest winner in our state’s history,” Georgia Lottery President and CEO Gretchen Corbin said. “With every Powerball ticket sold in Georgia supporting HOPE and Pre-K, Georgia’s students are also big winners. As we celebrate our lucky winner, we also thank our players and retailers for their support of our mission.”

The winning numbers for the Wednesday, Oct. 23 Powerball drawing were: 2-15-27-29-39 and the Powerball was 20. The Power Play multiplier was 2X.

Georgia’s lucky ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $478.2 million or a lump sum payment of $230.6 million. Both prize options are before taxes. If the winner selects the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments.

This is the highest single payout in Georgia Lottery history, surpassing the previous record held by a Mega Millions winner from Stone Mountain, who claimed half of a $648 million jackpot and was awarded a cash option of over $173 million before taxes.

This is also an exciting win for the retailer. Any Georgia Lottery retailer selling a winning Powerball jackpot ticket can earn the $50,000 retailer incentive bonus payment.

In Georgia, Powerball winners have 180 days from the draw date to claim prizes. Georgia Lottery players are reminded to check their tickets for one of the nine ways to win.

It only takes $2 to play Powerball for a chance to win big. Players can multiply non-jackpot prizes with the Power Play option for an additional $1 per play.

Powerball tickets can be purchased at Georgia Lottery retailers statewide. Georgia residents with a Georgia mailing address, who are located in Georgia at the time of purchase, can purchase tickets via the Georgia Lottery app or online at www.galottery.com.

Powerball drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. (ET).

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia. Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $28.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 2.1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 2.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
