Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Comfort & Joy: Kathy Mattea brings A Winter Gathering tour to Savannah's Plant Riverside

Need some good news?

Grammy award-winning country-bluegrass-folk artist Kathy Mattea is delivering good news and then some when she brings her Winter Gathering to District Live, Sunday, Dec. 15.

Just before Thanksgiving, Mattea and a sextet of musicians—three of whom have been with her for most of her nearly 40-year career—embarked on a 13-city tour, dropping joy bombs from Albany, N.Y., to Athens, Ga. The setlist is a curated mix off her two Christmas albums, some traditional holiday tunes, and a smattering of her chart-topping hits from the 1980s and ‘90s, such as “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses.”

Folks expecting the same-old-same-old, though, will be delighted by the breadth and depth of the seasonally inspired music. Just like Mattea’s broad range of styles, concertgoers will hear music from Celtic to Old English to hymns to rhythm-and-blues—a reflection of the intentionality with which she selects songs.

“We get to stretch a little bit,” said Mattea over the phone from the road. “It’s just a joy to play.”

'It's all about the song'

It took five years to “squirrel away” the songs that became 1993’s Good News Christmas album. At the time Mattea was recording it, she recalled, she would walk through the house and tell her husband, songwriter Jon Vezner, “This is the Christmas album that no one will hear because it didn’t have any traditional songs on it.”

But Mattea’s patience and commitment to create something new was validated with a Grammy award the following year. Her soulful interpretation of “Mary, Did You Know?” from that album captures the hope and fear every mother feels when looking at their newborn child, and Mattea’s burnished alto proves that the best and longest-lasting gifts aren’t always wrapped in pretty paper and frilly ribbons.

“When I was young, I worked with this now-legendary producer who said to me, ‘Kathy, just don't ever fool yourself. It's all about the song. It's just the song. If you find a great song and you sing it honestly, and you frame it well, it will be timeless.’”

That piece of advice, received in her early twenties, has been Mattea’s “compass” ever since. It has carried her through the capricious nature of the music industry, after her first album debuted in 1984; through the years when she had to learn how to sing again; as one of the featured artists in Ken Burns' PBS documentary, Country Music; to today, as the host of the long-running NPR show, Mountain Stage, where she uses her voice to celebrate the music of her native West Virginia.

“I really was torn about whether to take this gig,” said Mattea. “But when I sat down to really think about it, it checks all the boxes of what I think is important to put in the world. It gives people who are making music, who have a following, a chance to get out to a wider audience. It celebrates what music does in people's lives not necessarily in the most commercial way…and for me, I realized that supporting songwriters and helping them find their audience is really important. And they did that for me when I was coming up. Mountain Stage was part of what did that for me. And it's an institution, and it promotes West Virginia culture, not in the stereotypical way, but in the real way, the friendly, warm, welcoming way.

The Savannah stop for the Winter Gathering is a little more than halfway through the tour, and Mattea said that the band is having as much fun as the audience. “We’re having such a good time, and the musicianship is really high…Somebody will play a lick, and somebody else will be like, ‘Whoa,’ and then they’ll play something, and everybody will spark off of that.

“It feels really good, and our hope is that by the end of the show, we put you in the spirit of the season.”

PENSACOLA, Fla. – [Championship Bracket | Final Site Schedule | Watch Live | Live Stats] The 2024 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship Match had a team whose cinderella run was highlighted by tough defense and strong offense with SCAD Savannah (Ga.) and a team who has been in this position before with Keiser (Fla.). This year’s championship match had a total of 26 shots and five goals all in favor of the SCAD Savannah (Ga.). Allowing the Bees to head home with the program’s first-ever Red Banner.

SCAD started the game pursuing Sun Conference foe Keiser (Fla.) getting a goal in the fourth minute when Sydney Chura found Abigail Siddall on the back post for the header and a 1-0 lead. The Bees opened this year’s national championship making the final site for the first time ever in program history, and have continued to be dominant not allowing one goal all week.

The first ten minutes of play were all SCAD. The Bees netted their first goal four minutes after the opening kickoff from Chura, the Bees had another great look but pushed it just wide of the far post shortly after. In the 16th minute, Siddall put the Bees ahead 2-0 cleaning up the rebound off the Seahawks goalkeeper. Through the first 30 minutes of the opening half, the match was nearly even in every stat besides the one that mattered with the score. Both the Bees and Seahawks had three shots, SCAD led with a pair of shots on goal, and one corner.

Keiser began to settle in late in the first half, finding a few threatening chances, but SCAD was just as threatening on the counter-attacks out of the defense causing some issues for Keiser’s back line. Chura was having herself a first half in the Bee’s first-ever Women’s Soccer National Championship Match when she assisted on her third goal in the 36th minute as Lois Beer headed it in to lead The Sun Conference foe, Keiser 3-0. After the first half, SCAD led 7-4 in shots, 4-0 in shots on goal, and 2-0 on corner kicks against Keiser (Fla.). The Bees were dominant across the board on offense and defense.

The Bees continued to dominate throughout the match, but for the first time in the tournament, SCAD conceded a goal in the 78th minute, which cut their lead to 3-1 after Delfina Lombardi was able to flick it into the top back corner. The Bees responded just ten minutes later to push their lead back to three goals and secure the program’s first-ever Red Banner

2024 NAIA National Championship All-Tournament Team

Outstanding Defensive Player Award: Lois Beer, SCAD Savannah (Ga.)

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC/Gray News) – A mom in Georgia said a teacher threw her 11-year-old son across a classroom, and it was caught on video.

The incident happened at DeRenne Middle School in Savannah on Friday.

Video shows BeTreylin Elder, a teacher and football coach, grabbing a student identified as TJ by the shirt and throwing him across the room onto desks, knocking him down.

Che’Nelle Russell, TJ’s mother, said she wants accountability from the school district.

“I was told that he had a share of words that were inappropriate to TJ and that he had made some remarks about me, and my son was unhappy with it. So, my son then went to the front of the classroom to approach the teacher, letting him know, ‘Hey, stop talking about my mom.’ The teacher then came closer to my son. My son again said, ‘Stop talking about my mom’, and also wanted to call me. From that point, he was then grabbed and thrown to the floor like nothing,” Russell said.

The comments, according to another student, were sexual in nature, with the teacher allegedly saying that “he left his shoes at TJ’s mom’s house.”

Russell said she has never even met this teacher before and is appalled a teacher would say anything like this to her son.

“I just feel like they failed me. They let me down. It is heartbreaking. It causes a lack of trust in the school system. Something needs to be done,” Russell said.

Russell said her son was injured in the altercation, saying he has a concussion, multiple bruises, and is now scared to go back to school.

“He needs to be placed in jail. He hurt my boy. I’m heartbroken because I wouldn’t do that to my child. His father wouldn’t do that to him. So, for [the teacher] to take the initiative to do that is sickening,” Russell said.

Russell said she doesn’t want this to change the way her son thinks of teachers, or school as a whole, but she is worried about the emotional toll this will have long term.

She said the school district needs to have more thorough training and a better vetting process.

“I hate that [my son] had to be made an example out of to get a sick individual out of a schoolhouse, but something needs to change,” Russell said.

The district said the teacher was initially relocated but has since resigned.

The Savannah Chatham County Public School System said in a statement:

WTOC also tried to reach out to the teacher involved and has not received a response.
