This year, the beloved German-themed holiday market returned to Aurora's RiverEdge Park and Chicago's Daley Plaza. The admission-free outdoor market will be open Thursday through Sunday until Dec. 24, with some special hours mixed in.
Christkindlmarket specializes in handcrafted ornaments, toys and holiday gifts as well as traditional German food, sweets and drinks. This season in Aurora, vendors will increase to more than 60 — up from around 50 in 2023 and roughly 35 in 2022, organizers said.
Returning staples include Käthe Wohlfahrt, Puffy Houz' Dutch Pancakes and a Belgian Fries booth. Daily glassblowing workshops, lantern parades and twice-held German and Austrian wine-tasting events are also on the docket.
New this year in Aurora is the "Christkind's Workshop" photo opportunity, a European-imported vendor booth decorated in white and gold. Families can also partake in the Lederhosen Scavenger Hunt by searching for Nutcracker statues hidden throughout the market. AURORA, IL — Hesed House opened a new homeless shelter opened Sunday in Aurora, nearly doubling the original's capacity.
The newly renovated 680 Adult Shelter, located at 680 S. River St., across the street from Hesed House, repurposed a shuttered manufacturing facility to become the primary overnight shelter for both men and women. The new space is intended to increase efficiency for housing, food service and comprehensive care since all guests are under the same roof, according to Chief Communications and Equity Officer Clayton Muhammad.
680 Adult Shelter has room for almost two times as many unhoused people to be served each day, from about 145 guests before COVID-19 to 280 nowadays, Muhammad wrote in a news release. Hesed House is the second-largest homeless shelter in Illinois, following Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago.
"Hesed House isn't simply a homeless shelter; Hesed House is a safe haven that gives hope to people in hopeless situations," Mayor Irvin said at Sunday's ribbon-cutting ceremony. "Everyone deserves dignity. It's not just a tagline; that's the truth.
"To be able to now, as mayor, support the Hesed House and make sure, [Hesed House Executive Director Joe Jackson], that you never have to look in another human being's face and tell them you cannot help them, you cannot give them hope. Well, as long as I'm here as mayor, I will continue to support so you never have to say that again."

"This new shelter, it features a semi-non-congregate sleeping space and isolation space that not only better helps prevent the spread of communicable disease, but it also provides more comfort, more privacy and better dignity to our guests," Jackson said. "At the same time, it allows our staff to better monitor our guests for medical emergencies, safety emergencies, those types of things.
The space is also connected to Hesed House's Comprehensive Homeless Resource Center, which gives people support services and helps them with legal issues, abuse, and mental and physical health.
"The fact that this is connected to that building removes barriers of our guests engaging with our case management staff ... and all the connected services that are underneath the roof of this 680 building," Jackson said. "It makes ending homelessness easier on us and, most importantly, on our guests."

AURORA, IL — The Leapfrog Group released its fall 2024 hospital safety grades Friday, scoring Aurora's two hospitals along with 111 others in Illinois.
The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit health care watchdog group that grades hospitals twice a year, assigns letter grades ranging from "A" to "F," for 3,000 general hospitals on how well they prevent medical errors, accidents and infections.
In Aurora, Ascension Mercy and Rush Copley Medical Center both received "B" grades. Ascension Mercy, off North Highland Avenue, maintained its rating from spring 2024 and fall 2023, when it dropped from the "A" standing it earned in fall 2022 and spring 2023, according to the group.
Similarly, Rush Copley Medical Center, about 7 miles away, also kept its "B" grade from spring 2024 and fall 2023. Before then, the hospital had kept an "A" grade through at least spring 2021, Leapfrog data shows.
Overall, hospitals have made great strides since the pandemic years, when the risk of contracting deadly infections was elevated nationwide, but more work needs to be done, The Leapfrog Group said in a news release.

Illinois ranked 23rd among states for the number of hospitals earning the top letter grade. Overall, the state had 32 hospitals that earned "A" grades, 18 with "B" grades, 48 with "C" grades, 13 with "D" and two with "F" grades.
For the third grading cycle, Utah tops the list with the highest percentage of "A" hospitals, followed, respectively, by Virginia, Connecticut, North Carolina, New Jersey, California, Rhode Island, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Colorado and South Carolina. California ranked in the top 10 for the first time since the fall of 2014.
The fall 2024 ratings show improvement in patient safety across several performance measures, including notable improvements in health care-associated infections, hand hygiene and medication safety. Preventable deaths and harm in hospitals have long been a major policy focus for The Leapfrog Group.
Binder said significant variation in performance continues across U.S. hospitals. For example, four states — Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Vermont — had no "A" hospitals.
"That's why it's so important for people to consult grades when making decisions about seeking care," Binder said. "All hospitals are not the same."

AURORA, IL — November's First Fridays event in downtown Aurora will be centered around Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, with food, cultural activities and live music in store.
Festivities, including live Catrinas and decorated windows, will take place from 5-9 p.m. across multiple downtown venues, including Lot E (between Broadway and LaSalle Street), Water Street Mall, Mundy Park and Skinny Park.
The Dia de los Muertos tradition brings families together to honor and celebrate the lives of the dead. The custom takes mourning and transforms it into a celebration of life. The holiday is typically celebrated Nov. 1-2.
More than 30 downtown businesses will feature First Friday offerings. Here's a look:
