For some restaurants, whether old or new, the reason for the season is not just to celebrate with food and drink — it’s to go wild over holiday decor. In this miniseries, we highlight the spots across the country for whom extra doesn’t begin to cover it when it comes to lights, tinsel, and Christmas spirit. Next up: the town of Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Drive north on I-75 from Detroit headed toward Flint, almost to Saginaw, and you’re bound to encounter the signage beckoning you to get off the freeway and make a most holy jolly detour. Frankenmuth is a town of around 5,000 known as Michigan’s Little Bavaria for the architecture resembling an Old World Alpine village that dominates the commercial downtown area. For Midwesterners near and far, Frankenmuth is the place to go for those of us whose idea of cheer is a Christmas town that keeps the holiday razzle dazzle alive all year ‘round.

Formerly settled by 15 German Lutheran missionaries looking to establish their way of life in Michigan (and convert the Indigenous community into Christianity), somewhere along the way, Frankenmuth became home to what its owners claim is the world’s largest Christmas store. The sprawling, 7.35-acre emporium features tens of thousands of ornaments from around the world, designed with every interest in mind, and draws even more visitors every year — all scrambling to fulfill their consumeristic wildest dreams. This time of year, expect long wait times at the cashier’s line and throngs of spectators.

Stroll along Main Street, and you’ll likely pick up on Hallmark vibes, with Christmas carols playing in the streets, multicolored strings of twinkle lights, horse-drawn carriage rides, as well as a food-lover’s array of Alpine inspired shops and cafes, including cheese mongers, sausage makers, and fudge shops whose heavenly chocolate aroma invites tourists in from the cold. Check out the German-themed River Place Shops, an outdoor mall featuring more than 40 shops, as well as family-friendly events, like the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl.

But the bulk of visitors to Frankenmuth are bound to stop by one of two of the most quintessential dining experiences one can have in town: a visit to one of the town’s beloved and iconic fried chicken houses. Both owned by (different branches of) the Zehnder family and situated directly across the street from each other sit Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and the Bavarian Inn.

According to Restaurant Business, Zehnder’s and Bavarian Inn are two of the highest-volume independent restaurants in the country, with more than 1,000 seats in each; in 2022, the two collectively served some 1.8 million people.

The Fischer family opened the Fischer Hotel in Frankenmuth in 1888, and supposedly came up with the concept of the all-you-can-eat fried chicken menu. In 1928, William Zehnder, Sr. and his wife Emilie purchased a former hotel across the street from the Fischer Hotel and began serving overflow customers who couldn’t get into the Fischer Hotel restaurant, naming their establishment Zehnder’s. In 1950, the Zehnder family took over the Fischer Hotel from its original owners and today, both establishments are famous for their fried chicken dinners. The all-you-care-to-eat family-style menus are still available at both eateries featuring lightly-breaded crisp-skinned fried chicken, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberry relish, cottage cheese, and a menagerie of other relishes and sides.

No matter where you eat in town, for many families, a trip to Frankenmuth is infused with a sense of nostalgia. ““Generation after generation come here,” current Zenhder’s CEO Al Zehnder, grandson of William, told Restaurant Business in 2022. Whether it’s the noodle soup served along with chicken dinner, or the costumed servers (colonial American style at Zehnder’s, German Bavarian at the Bavarian Inn), “they know what to expect.”

Marshall

Founded in 1830, this charming town prides itself on its offbeat attractions like Honolulu House. Built in 1860, this unusual yet elegant mansion was inspired by Polynesian architecture and is as curious as it is beautiful (guided tours are available). Walking tours of Marshall’s other historic homes are also rewarding, especially during the town’s Annual Historic Home Tour. Started in the 1960s, this September event draws curious travelers with the promise of seeing inside elegant old homes that wouldn’t normally be open to the public.

Be sure to check out the art installations dotted around town, too. One of the best, the Marshall Mural, is a splash of color and whimsy that makes for a superb selfie backdrop. And for those who enjoy great music, Marshall delivers. Visit during the Marshall Blues Festival held every June or later in July for the Marshall Bluegrass Festival, a week-long celebration of this popular genre. For an added dose of the eccentric, visit the American Museum of Magic, a one-of-a-kind institution filled with artifacts from the world of magic and illusions, including artifacts such as original handcuffs used by Harry Houdini.

Frankenmuth

A town with a strong Bavarian heritage, Frankenmuth blends tradition with a distinct sense of whimsy, making it a fascinating place to visit. Known as Michigan’s “Little Bavaria,” Frankenmuth has many examples of German-influenced architecture, including the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, dating from 1888, and Holz Brücke, a covered wooden bridge built in 1980 that spans the Cass River.

Every September, the town hosts one of the best Oktoberfest’s in the Midwest, featuring authentic German food along with traditional music and dancing. Other eccentric influences are evident in Frankenmuth’s Christmas-themed Bronner’s, the world’s largest Christmas store, which attracts holiday lovers year-round with its vast selection of ornaments and holiday décor. In the summer, Zehnder’s Splash Village offers an unusual indoor waterpark experience, complete with Bavarian-themed slides and pools.

Hell

Whether aptly named or not (you’ll need to visit for yourself to decide!), Hell is undoubtedly one of Michigan’s most bizarre towns, a reputation townsfolk have embraced with a self-confessed “devilish enthusiasm.” Originally founded as a milling village in the 1830s, Hell has since transformed into a place that celebrates its spooky name with tongue-in-cheek humor and quirky attractions. Pay a visit to send postcards “from Hell” to friends and family, explore a gothic ice cream parlor called Screams, or attend the quirky Damnation University, where diplomas are awarded to all who dare enroll.

Every October, Hell hosts a Halloween-themed event that attracts thrill-seekers from around Michigan. And visit over winter, which many people do, and you’ll have the chance to grab a photo of the town’s sign covered in ice, proving that, yes, Hell does indeed freeze over.

Hamtramck

An enclave within Detroit, Hamtramck stands out for its incredible cultural diversity and unusual street art scene. Known for its mix of cultures, one of the best places to get a glimpse at the community’s creative side is the “Hamtramck Disneyland.” This quirky backyard art installation started in the 1990s and is filled with colorful sculptures, flags, and unexpected artistic expressions that have made it an icon of local creativity and a must-see for visitors passing through.

Hamtramck’s music scene is equally unique, with venues like Small’s Bar hosting punk and alternative rock shows from top bands from across the country. The Hamtramck Blowout music festival is held every March and transforms the town into a hub for independent music with upwards of 150 performances to choose from.

Charlevoix

Known for its wonderful Mushroom Houses designed by architect Earl Young, Charlevoix has a fairy-tale feel that’s unlike any other place in Michigan. These whimsical stone structures, built between 1919 and 1970, attract visitors curious about Young’s unique architectural style and are fun to walk past (they’re private residences, so they are not open to the public). Charlevoix’s picturesque setting along Lake Michigan and Round Lake also enhances its appeal, especially if viewed from the historic Charlevoix Lighthouse, established in 1885 and offering great views of the lake.

The annual Venetian Festival in July features parades, boat races, and fireworks, drawing families and tourists for a week of lakeside fun. Speaking of fun by the lake, the Little Traverse Wheelway is an excellent bike route with beautiful lake views along a 26-mile-long route connecting Charlevoix with Harbor Springs. So, bring a bike as cycling is a great way to explore the town’s eccentric side.

Saugatuck

The lakeside town of Saugatuck offers both artistic flair and scenic beauty, attracting artists, art lovers, and tourists alike. Founded in 1868, Saugatuck has developed something of an artsy vibe that appeals to those looking for a creative escape. Highlights include the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, which regularly hosts exhibitions and performances, while local galleries, such as Amazwi Contemporary Art, showcase unique works from regional artists.

For a truly memorable and eccentric experience, hop aboard the town’s historic chain ferry. Dating back to 1838, it provides a memorable way to cross the Kalamazoo River.

Have you heard the news? A new indoor waterpark is coming to Michigan!

We’re seriously counting down the days for the grand opening of Bavarian Blast in Frankenmuth.

Bavarian Blast, the brand-new waterpark resort at the Bavarian Inn, will soon feature Michigan’s first swim-up bar (and yes, it’s heated and open year-round!) and is set to become the largest indoor waterpark in the state.

Frankenmuth, already famous for Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, is really stepping up its waterpark game with this addition.

When Will Bavarian Blast Open?

Of course, the big question on everyone’s mind: when will Bavarian Blast finally open?

Originally expected in fall 2024, the timeline has shifted to late fall. There’s talk of a possible opening by the December holidays—or maybe later—leaving us all wondering if it will be ready for winter break.

The hotel isn’t making any promises yet, so while you can book a room and cross your fingers, it’s still up in the air.

Fortunately, the current waterpark is fully operational, and new attractions like laser tag are already available, so there’s plenty to enjoy in the meantime.

Sneak Peek at Bavarian Blast

If the comments on social media are anything to go by, we already know what Michigan is buzzing about with the new waterpark (yes, swim-up bar, you’re a rockstar).

But beyond that, 16 waterslides, the giant wave pool, the lazy river, and the open roof are all up there as favorites in the making. And we can’t forget the giant kids’ water playground with tipping bucket, or the indoor/outdoor spas.

Honestly, we’ll probably have to try everything before we can pick a winner.

Greta’s River Run is the 85,500 gallon Not-So-Lazy River. It will have a tranquil garden theme.

Look for flower and vegetable gardens, bird bath and water sprays.

If we can grab a drink and float around the lazy river, sign us up!

Big Kid Play Area

Your bigger kids will find Cuckoo’s Chaos and never want to leave.

It will have four thrilling waterslides, both open and enclosed.

Plus a climbing area with a huge dump bucket (minus the actual bucket – it’s a cuckoo clock instead).

Wave Pool

Stay close to the “shore” and let the waves gently lap you.

Or get more adventurous and head into the huge waves in the deeper water.

The wave pool at Bavarian Blast has various wave patterns including “the Big Kahuna”.

Toddler Zone

Toddlers are covered, too, at Puddle Platz.

This zero-entry pool will have a tot bounce, water table, two aqua domes, and waterslides.
