GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Over a hundred schools across West Michigan are closed on Thursday, Dec. 12 with heavy lake-effect snow, strong winds and low visibility creating dangerous road conditions.
The storm system moved in Wednesday afternoon. There are currently sub-zero wind chills throughout the region and the forecast is for 30 mph wind gusts.

Multiple schools began canceling early Wednesday night as conditions worsened. Schools in Kent, Kalamazoo, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Barry and Van Buren counties are among those announcing closures.
School districts closed include Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Kentwood, Forest Hills, Hudsonville, Holland, Rockford, Portage, Muskegon, West Ottawa, Zeeland, East Grand Rapids, North Muskegon, Wyoming, Grandville, Caledonia, Grand Haven, Mona Shores, Northview, Kenowa Hills, Spring Lake, Oakridge, Fruitport, Jenison and Cedar Springs.
On Thursday, the National Weather Service warned the poor travel conditions will persist with lake-effect and blowing snow continuing. Weather conditions are expected to improve Thursday evening.

Howard Jackson, Grand Rapids, MI— Howard Jackson passed away unexpectedly on the morning of December 7th, 2024. He was surrounded by family during his final moments.
Earlier this year, Howard faced significant health challenges. In July, he suffered a stroke that led to brain damage and required him to be placed in a medically induced coma for three weeks. After a period of recovery, Howard began to improve and was able to return home. However, his condition worsened, and by October, he was hospitalized again due to a severe infection that began in his foot and spread through his bloodstream, eventually affecting his heart and causing organ damage.
Howard was moved to the ICU on Thursday and remained in a vegetative state. Family members kept vigil, sharing stories, prayers, and moments of comfort with him. Despite efforts to revive him, his body could not endure, and he passed away early on Friday morning.

In accordance with Howard’s wishes, his family is organizing a cremation service to honor his life, which will take place on December 20th, 2024. The family has set up a fundraiser to cover the costs of the service, hoping for support from friends and the community.

Not a lot has changed for West Michigan in regard to this system, Winter Storm Warnings run along the Lake Michigan coastline for lake effect snow. Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, 4-9 inches of snow fell over Ludington and Pentwater from lake effect snow.

The current winter storm warning includes Lake County alongside Mason County. This is for snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches and winds gusting as high as 35 mph tonight. AccuWeather predicts the Baldwin area to get 1-3 inches of snow, giving them an 82% chance.

Current snowfall predictions for West Michigan from Dec. 10 to Dec. 12:
Northern Michigan
Currently, winter storm warnings are still in effect for Manistee and Benzie Counties through 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. This is for snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

Other counties in the warning include Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Wexford Counties. More counties further north and west are also under Winter Storm Warnings.
Trends have backed off the initial outlook of over a foot of snow for the Manistee area, shifting it inland towards Gaylord once again. Still, Manistee is expected to see snow in the 4-8 inch range from this event. AccuWeather gives Manistee a 52% chance of seeing 6-10 inches of snow and a 43% chance of seeing 3-6 inches.
Alongside this, wind chill temperatures are still expected to stay below 0, with projections still holding around -6 degrees. The overnight low air temperature is expected to be around 12 degrees with wind gusts around 30 mph.
“Starting to see snow shower activity blossom across the region early this afternoon per APX and surrounding radars," the Gaylord NWS said in their 3:10 p.m. update. "This is in response to a chunk of arctic air (-20 to -25 C) dropping into the area from the northwest. The flow is rather light and chaotic at the moment but this will increase later this evening and especially later tonight behind a surface cold front which will move through the area."

Grand Rapids-based Wheeler Development Group broke ground on the three-story, 54-room hotel in June. The $14 million project is seen by city officials as a catalyst for growth that will add to the vibrancy of downtown Rockford and provide an “inviting location” for visitors to explore the community.
“Megan and her team have crafted a unique niche within the health and wellness space that fosters community and serves as a creative space for people to come together,” said Wheeler Development Group spokesperson Jason Wheeler. “That is exactly what we intended the ground floor tenant mix to achieve, so we are excited for Kula Yoga, and we are looking forward to seeing them thrive at Hotel Rose.”

Kula’s new space at Hotel Rose is 1,550 square feet.
Wheeler Development Group was represented in the leasing deal by Courtney Marquis Mulica with PURE Real Estate Brokerage.
“It’s been an honor representing Hotel Rose and bringing unique retail opportunities to Rockford,” she said. “Our intent with the overall tenant mix on the ground floor of Hotel Rose is to deliver offerings that serve both the hotel guests and the area residents alike. Kula Yoga does just that.”
Wheeler Development Group has been working to make Hotel Rose a reality since at least 2018.
The project was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and had struggled to find financing because of high interest rates. However, the project is underway now after receiving a $3.25 million low-interest from the Michigan Strategic Fund and hosting a ceremonial groundbreaking in late June.
The 54-room hotel will feature a combination of kings and double queen rooms, as well as two restaurants. The concept for each restaurant will be announced at a later date, Wheeler Development Group said in June. Wheeler Development Group says it’s working with PURE Real Estate Brokerage to finalize agreements on the remaining ground-floor retail space.

One of the most important decisions for parents is where to send their child to school. There can be a number of factors involved in that decision, including academic quality, cost and scholarship availability when deciding between public and private schools.
The average private school tuition in Michigan is $8,224 per year, according to recently published lists for the 2024-25 school year from Private School Review, a website established in 2003 to profile thousands of private schools nationwide.
High school tuition is even more expensive on average - $13,008.
The site identified 78 of the most expensive Michigan private high schools, with 11 of those located in Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties.

Private School Review profiles thousands of private schools across the U.S., relying on both self-reported data from schools and information from the National Center for Education Statistics.
So, how do those tuition costs for private schools compare across West Michigan?
The range starts as low as $3,250 a year and shoots up to tens of thousands of dollars.
