Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

STAMFORD — The pace of early voting in Stamford has been "very steady," according to a deputy registrar for the city.
By late Wednesday, 10,814 Stamford voters had cast a ballot in the early voting window. That represents 14 percent of the 76,418 registered voters in the city. According to a tally of early voting from the Secretary of the State's office, only West Hartford and Norwalk had registered more votes than Stamford by early Wednesday.
According to Monica Di Costanzo, the city’s deputy Democratic registrar of voters, Stamford is averaging 1,081 voted ballots per day, or about 128 voters per hour.
She said the city has been anticipating an active election day on Nov. 5, when the next American president will be decided along with a handful of local and statewide races. Di Costanzo anticipates that counting of the early voting ballots will begin around 8 a.m. on that day, followed by absentee ballots.
"It's going to be a very long day," she said.
Di Costanzo said Tuesday was an especially busy day, as about 1,800 residents cast a ballot. Early voting in Stamford takes place at Government Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will run until Nov. 3. Oct. 31 is the only day left in which the hours for voting will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
As Nov. 5 approaches, Di Costanzo said the city is well prepared to deal with an anticipated large turnout, both in early voting and day-of voting, which will include residents registering and voting on the day of the election.
"We have everything planned," she said. "We had expected some large turnout so we have enough counters, we have enough counting teams."
Voting has been busy in Stamford since early voting officially opened on Oct. 21 with long lines of residents casting their ballots. More than 200 people voted in the first two hours of the polling location being open. This is the first general election in Connecticut in which early voting is an option.
Early voting was first approved in a ballot referendum in 2022; Connecticut is one of the last states in the country to implement it.
Anyone who is registered to vote can cast their vote early.
Same day registration is available for each day of the early voting period, and voters can cast their ballots the same day, according to the Office of the Secretary of the State.

STAMFORD, CT — For those looking to get a taste of Europe and the Balkans without leaving the confines of Stamford, look no further than Europa Balkan Food Market, a small specialty grocery store located at 1100 Hope St.
The business is family-operated and owned by Adi Memeti, who opened about a month ago in the space formerly occupied by a gym and previously Giacamo's Deli.
Memeti, a former general manager at Blackstone's Steakhouse and a veteran in the food industry for over 20 years, works with distributors in different regions to bring unique offerings to his store.
Europa Balkan Food Market features a wide selection of cheeses; meats like sausages, salamis, top round and beef ribs; pasta; beans; honey; spices; olives; jams and spreads; beverages; snacks; chocolates; sweets; frozen foods and more from countries like Albania; Bosnia; Bulgaria; Croatia; Germany; Greece; Hungary; Italy; Kosovo; North Macedonia; Poland; Romania; Serbia and Montenegro; Slovenia; and Turkey.
There are a variety of homemade desserts, like baklava, Greek cookies and more.

Customers can also grab a cup of Turkish, Greek or Italian coffee for 99 cents in what could be the best deal in Stamford, or $1.99 for a cup of espresso. The coffee is also for sale to make at home.
A 20-year resident of Stamford, Memeti said he wanted to open the market to bring a taste of Europe and the Balkans to Springdale and the city. He said he's had the idea for over a year.
The reaction from the community since he opened in late September has been positive, Memeti said, with customers often trying something new or finding something they haven't had or been able to find in years.
"Every single customer says, 'Wow, thank you very much for opening,'" Memeti said. "I don't think of this as just a grocery store. It's not like going to Stop & Shop. I think here you feel like you're back to your roots, back to your country, and back to memories of when you were young."
Europa Balkan Food Market is open from Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Follow the business on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with updates and new offerings.
