Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards

The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.

1. Assessment and Inspection

Initial Assessment:

  • Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
  • Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.

Mold Sampling:

  • Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
  • Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
  • If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.

2. Containment Protocols

Containment Procedures:

  • To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
  • The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
  • Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
  • The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.

4. Remediation Process

Source Control:

  • Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.

Cleaning and Removal of Mold:

  • Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
  • Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
  • Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
  • HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.

Cleaning Techniques:

  • Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
  • Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.

5. Post-Remediation Evaluation

Final Inspection:

  • After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
  • Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
  • It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
  • This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.

6. Ongoing Prevention

  • Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.

By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

In-person voting for the 2024 general election started in North Carolina.

Early voting runs Thursday, Oct. 17 - Saturday, Nov. 2. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Here’s what to know about voting sites in Wake County and how to check what will appear on your ballot.

If voting early, any eligible Wake County voter can go to any polling place in the county.

There are 22 early voting sites in the county:

Enter your address to find a polling site near you on the county’s website.

Polling place hours vary by day. View a schedule at wake.gov.

If voting on Election Day, eligible Wake County voters must vote at their assigned polling place so that they receive a ballot that contains the races for which they can vote.

Find your assigned polling place by using the North Carolina State Board of Elections Polling Place Search at vt.ncsbe.gov/PPLkup.

Eligible voters in North Carolina will see some races in common across their ballots, for federal and state offices:

Some ballot items depend on where a voter lives. These could include mayor, city council, state senate and house, district court judges, school board and other races.

There may also be referenda including bonds and constitutional amendments.

View a sample ballot using the Voter Search, available at vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup.

The State Board of Elections addressed frequently asked voter questions, concerns and misconceptions after the first few days of early voting. Here’s what to know about and expect when you head to the polls:

Be prepared to wait in line. Wear comfortable shoes, pack snacks, slather on sunscreen and consider bringing a folding chair, umbrella and/or handheld fan. If you want to know before you go, some counties — including Wake County — have trackers to let you check voting wait times online.

▪ Remember your photo ID. Find a complete list of acceptable forms of ID at BringItNC.gov.

▪ Poll workers might write on your ballot, and that’s OK. It does not invalidate your vote.

It’s illegal to photograph your ballot. Voters can use their cell phones or other electronic devices inside the voting booth to access candidate information, but they can’t take a photo of their ballot or communicate with anyone while voting.

▪ Curbside voting is an option for voters who sign a sworn statement saying they can’t enter the polling place without assistance because of age or disability. It is not available for voters who don’t want to wait in line.

▪ You can wear political attire, but only certain types. Your clothing can say the name of a candidate, but poll workers might ask you to cover up if your clothing says to “vote for” the candidate.

▪ You can leave contests blank, and your ballot will still count.

▪ Candidate supporters and volunteers might be outside the voting site handing out flyers and information about candidates. This is allowed by law as long as they are outside the marked buffer zone. Aggressive campaigners or those inside the buffer zone can be reported to an election official.

Donate to Hurricane Recovery

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many people are eager to help those affected, but it's important to stay vigilant against scammers who can try to exploit such situations.

Residents who want to help with the recovery effort are encouraged to donate to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions, which help with the unmet needs of hurricane victims, can be made online by secure link at nc.gov/donate.

Avoid unsolicited requests for donations, especially through emails, social media or phone calls, and always verify the legitimacy of the charity or fundraiser before providing any personal or financial information.

People are asked not to collect and transport supplies into the region unless they are part of an existing NCVOAD organization. Roads are closed to all traffic other than emergency services and pre-approved shipments. To learn about available volunteer opportunities, residents can fill out the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s VolunteerNC survey.

Wake County Responds to Western NC

Wake County has deployed more than 100 responders and critical resources to assist with recovery efforts in response to the widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina.

“We stand united with our neighbors in Western North Carolina during this incredibly difficult time, and we are committed to helping in any way we can,” said Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Shinica Thomas. “In times of crisis, it’s important for us to come together and show that we’re stronger as a state when we support one another.”

The number of local agencies responding to the area continues to grow. As of October 7:

“Helping our neighbors is not just the right thing to do – it’s our responsibility,” said Darrell Alford, director of Wake County Fire Services and Emergency Management. “Whether it’s sending additional boots on the ground to help with the physical devastation or helping to relieve the emotional toll workers are feeling, Wake County stands ready to assist in any way possible.”

For “One Sweet Day,” the town of Cary will be spelled “Carey” to honor the “Queen of Christmas.”

Grammy award-winning singer Mariah Carey called into Triangle radio station Mix 101.5FM Friday morning to help kick off the holiday season with Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht, who proclaimed the town would have a special spelling for the day.

“I need to move there, maybe,” Carey said after Weinbrecht read part of the proclamation. “That’s was amazing. ... My father would have been so proud.”

The document said Carey’s 1994 song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” inspires people around the world with “holiday cheer.”

“This day commemorates our community’s dedication to spreading the spirit of love, joy, and togetherness to all just like the message in Ms. Carey’s unforgettable hit,” the proclamation read.

The town also announced a karaoke event, Mariah Careyoke, on Nov. 22 in Downtown Cary Park with all the singer’s famous hits. Singers will be judged by the Mix 101.5 radio hosts Kyle Smelser, Bryan Lord and Sarah King.

The top performer will win tickets to see Carey perform her Christmas concert in Raleigh on Dec. 9 at the Lenovo Center.

Among Carey’s titles, she is known as the “Songbird Supreme” for her songwriting talents and five-octave vocal range and whistle register, the highest register of the human voice.

She released her first self-titled album in 1990 and her first five singles reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart including “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” and “Someday.”

She is also known for R&B hits “Emotions,” “Make it Happen,” and “One Sweet Day,” sung with R&B group Boys II Men.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” topped the Billboard chart during three of the last four holiday seasons, ceding the top spot last year to Brenda Lee’s 1954 hit “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Billboard reported.

On Friday, Carey signaled the end to her song’s annual hibernation with a new opening to its video. In it she portrays Morticia Addams before opening a dresser bureau to reveal a red dress and announcing, “It’s time.”

Tickets to Carey’s Christmas show in Raleigh are on sale now at lenovocenter.com.
