Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

AUSTIN, Texas — If you live in Texas, the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 5 election was Oct. 7. Each year, thousands of people head to the polls to cast their ballots, only to find out that they won't be able to. But don't judge them too harshly: More than half of all states allow either same-day registration, early-voting registration or – in the case of North Dakota – don't require voter registration at all.
If you're one of the many Texans realizing it's too late to register to cast your ballot, don't despair. There are still a few things you can do to participate in the democratic process.
It's hardly a consolation, but you can register to vote now for the next election. Every year, there is something to be voted on, whether it's city, county, state or national elections. Don't put it off for another year.
In Texas, you can't register to vote electronically. But you can register to vote at the same time you get or renew a driver's license or state ID, or you can register to vote by mail or in person.
Remember: you can fill out an application to register to vote online, but that application has to be printed and either taken in person or mailed to your county election office.
Every party, political action committee, candidate and cause needs people to volunteer their time to help their campaign. Volunteers do things like knocking on doors to talk to other voters, answering phone calls and helping with administrative tasks. Find the cause or candidate that you're passionate about and contact them. There's a great likelihood that they'll jump at the chance to have more helping hands.
If you convince two people to go to the polls, you've done more than casting a ballot. Talk to your loved ones who are registered to vote and encourage them to take the time to vote.
In the 2020 presidential election, only 60% of eligible voters cast a ballot. Talk to others about the importance of voting, or even offer to give them a ride.
Keep in mind, there are some forms of voting encouragement that are illegal in Texas. According to Texas Penal Code, it's illegal for anyone to "influence the independent exercise of the vote of another in the presence of the ballot or during the voting process." In other words, don't encourage people as they're voting or if they're just about to vote. That moves from the realm of "encouragement" to the ream of "intimidation."
KVUE has a voter guide that can teach you more about how to vote, where to vote and a list of candidates on the ballot. There's also a lot more election coverage on KVUE.com/VoteTexas, and you can track the latest results on KVUE.com/Elections on Election Day.
No matter where you choose to get your news and information, stay informed about the candidates, issues and voting process so that you can vote next year.

As of October 2024, the average solar panel system costs $2.22/W including installation in Austin, TX. For a 5 kW installation, this comes out to about $11,077 before incentives, though prices range from $9,415 to $12,739. After the federal tax credit, the average price drops by 30%.
You'll probably pay even less than what we show here. It doesn't include the federal ITC or Austin, TX state incentives, which will lower this price by at least a few thousand dollars.
It may seem obvious but larger solar panel systems cost more money. We use cost per watt ($/W) so you can easily compare quotes, controlling for slight variations in system size.
While a 5 kW system will only cost you $11,077 in Austin, TX, doubling the system size effectively doubles the price, so you'll pay about twice that for a 10 kW system. The higher the price tag, though, the more you'll get back as a credit towards your federal tax bill.
Average solar cost by system size in Austin, TX
If you can't shell out $11,077 in cash to pay for solar, don't sweat it. You can choose to finance your system with a loan instead. Some companies even offer $0-down loans so you can start saving on day one if your loan payments are less than your current electric bills. Just keep in mind that your long-term savings will be lower with a loan due to interest rates.
The numbers we're showing are averages. The price you'll pay for solar depends on many factors unique to you and your home:
If you're looking for solar companies in TX, here are some popular suggestions:
Solar is a major purchase, but you can get the price tag to come down a bit by being an educated shopper. Taking advantage of incentives and rebates and shopping around for quotes can bring down your cost of solar in Austin, TX.
As long as your federal tax bill is high enough, you can take advantage of the federal tax credit in Austin, TX. This incentive allows you to apply 30% of your solar installation and equipment costs toward your federal tax bill. If the amount exceeds your tax bill, you can roll over the remaining credit to the following year. Many states also offer great local incentives and rebates.
Comparing multiple solar quotes can save you money through competition and transparency. Each additional quote you receive for solar will help you find the right solar panel system at the right price.
This is where EnergySage can help. With funding from the Department of Energy’s SunShot Prize, EnergySage opened the country’s first (and now the largest) marketplace for home solar panel installations. We gather custom solar quotes from local installers on your behalf and put them in an easy-to-compare format. When you compare quotes for solar panels on the EnergySage Marketplace, you can expect to see prices up to 20% lower than if you work with a single solar company.
