Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

“It’s an experience,” Murfreesboro resident Brandon Miller told News 2. “It’s not just going to a gas station and you get your drinks and snacks and go on. It’s usually a 15 or 30-minute endeavor at least, especially with kids.”
Another Murfreesboro resident, Maya Mulraine, added that the chain typically has some of the best bathroom gas stations she had ever seen.
“I think it’ll be nice for people who are stopping on the road just to have that sort of option,” Mulraine added.
Perhaps you wouldn’t find a bigger fan than Murfreesboro Councilmember Shawn Wright.
“They dress like the beaver for Christmas,” Wright said. “Anytime we’re on the road, if there’s a Buc-ee’s even close, we will drive out of the way to go to a Buc-ee’s.
In Murfreesboro, the project is two-fold. First, construction crews are currently busy realigning the roadway off Joe B. Jackson Parkway to make room.
Once that’s complete, hopefully before the end of this year or the beginning of next year, a Buc-ee’s spokesperson said that building construction could begin. That will take roughly a year and a half.
“Tennessee has a great workforce, people are friendly, and a lot of people are going to places like Nashville and going to the Smoky Mountains to enjoy their travel,” Buc-ee’s General Counsel Jeff Nadalo said.
The beaver is also expected to bring big bucks to the city.
“The Crossvillee store’s brought in $5 to 5.5 million in revenue and that’s non-petroleum sales, that’s just inside sales,” Wright said “The Sevierville store’s at $9.5 million and most of those visitors are from 100 miles away from those stores. When you take that into effect, that could create $2.75 million worth of tax revenue for the city of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County.”
Nadalo said the store will also bring more than 200 jobs, which are high-paying and come with benefits.
“Managers make about $120,000 a year, 200 plus jobs and those jobs have benefits as well…” Wright added. “I’m excited for this project to get on the road and I’m hoping I don’t gain 500 pounds eating Buc-ee’s brisket everyday.”

Millie Rodriguez’s quick actions saved Geneva McKnight’s life, who was having a heart attack.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - Sept. 1 was a normal day for Murfreesboro City Schools bus driver Millie Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who’s been driving a bus since 2019 for the school system, says she went to lunch with her husband during her morning and afternoon routes. She decided that day she would go back to work early, a life-saving decision.
When she got to Hobgood Elementary, she saw her friend Geneva McKnight, who’s the school crossing guard. But McKnight was not in her usual parking spot — which alerted Millie to her car.
“I said Miss Geneva, how are you doing today,” Rodriguez recalled.
McKnight then got out of her car and headed for the school, with Rodriguez following close behind.
“She says, ‘Millie, I think I’m having a heart attack,’” Rodriguez said.
McKnight, who’s been a crossing guard at Hobgood since 1997, found herself in the hands of Rodriguez and the staff at the school.
“Millie had my right hand, and someone had my left hand, and I asked Millie to pray for me,” McKnight said.
McKnight was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that she was having a heart attack. While she was kept in the hospital for a week, no more than three weeks later she was back on Baird Lane, making sure students crossed the street safely, all thanks to a now lifelong friend.
“I just thank God that he put her here,” McKnight said.
Rodriguez was recognized at the most recent Murfreesboro City School Board Meeting, which you can view here.
“[I’m] Proud of the work I do, proud of the person I am, but most importantly, you got to be proud of the difference you and I can make,” Rodriguez said.
McKnight, who’s 85 years old, has no plans to turn in her patrol uniform just yet. She says she has the most coveted crossing guard position in the system, and Rodriguez joked that she may want that job when she decides to retire from driving the bus.
“God put us together,” Rodriguez said. ‘Yes he did,” McKnight answered.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — Talks about bringing Minor League Baseball to Cannonsburgh Village in Murfreesboro have rekindled.
For Lisa Cisco, chairperson of “Home Run History,” the Village tells the story of not just Murfreesboro’s history, but also her own. Home Run History is a group that has been working to bring a Minor League Baseball team to a Murfreesboro facility.
“My family owned the home that’s in the very front and my grandmother grew up in the house that was in the back,” Cisco said. “It’s very important to me that we maintain our history.”
Originally, Cisco told News 2 that she wasn’t on board with a baseball stadium, thinking it would replace the town’s roots. However, she’s since learned that the proposing developer doesn’t want to take away Cannonsburgh at all. The two went back to the drawing board.
“It would become the main entrance to the baseball park. They would utilize Cannosnburgh’s history,” Cisco said. “It’s not going to be a huge park. They’ve scaled back the size of it, which will also decrease the cost that was anticipated.”
Cisco’s previous “Save Cannonsgurgh” Facebook group has the name “Home Run History.”
The organization has partnered with the developer, working on renderings for a newly proposed 3,500-seat stadium.
“[It would be] A great place for young families, grandparents bringing grandchildren, people that just love baseball,” Cisco added. “It’s going to have a lot of entertainment value, and the pricing will be similar to what it is when you go to the movies.”

News 2 spoke with Cannonsburgh visitors, who all supported the idea so long as the stadium preserves village history
“It’s important for previous generations to come over here and get to see the town and understand how people lived back then,” Chris Underwood added.
Cisco said that they to have renderings to share with the public in the coming weeks. Once she and the developer feel they have enough support, they’ll take their plans to City Council.
