Mold Testing and Remediation Overview: Following IICRC S520 Standards
The IICRC S520 standard provides a clear guide for safely managing mold issues in homes and buildings. Its main goals are to protect people, ensure thorough cleanup, and prevent future mold problems.
1. Assessment and Inspection
Initial Assessment:
- Trained professionals will conduct a detailed inspection of the affected area. This includes visual checks and using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to find hidden mold or moisture.
- Understanding moisture sources is crucial, as mold often arises from water issues or high humidity.
Mold Sampling:
- Although not always needed, testing (both air and surface samples) can help identify the type and amount of mold present.
- Sampling is useful when mold is suspected but not visible, such as when there are odors or health concerns.
- If sampling is done, it must follow proper protocols, with analysis performed by accredited labs.
2. Containment Protocols
Containment Procedures:
- To stop mold spores from spreading during cleanup, barriers (like plastic sheeting and negative air pressure) are used.
- The extent of containment varies; small areas might require basic barriers, while larger or heavily contaminated spaces need more extensive containment.
- Workers must enter and exit through decontamination chambers to avoid spreading mold.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Workers should wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, N95 masks, full-body suits, and eye protection.
- The type of PPE needed depends on how severe the contamination is; more protective gear may be required for heavily affected areas.
4. Remediation Process
Source Control:
- Addressing the root cause of moisture is essential. This may involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or managing humidity.
Cleaning and Removal of Mold:
- Mold cannot just be treated with chemicals; it must be physically removed.
- Non-porous materials (like metals and glass) can often be cleaned with HEPA vacuums or damp cloths.
- Severely affected porous materials (like drywall and carpets) should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations.
- HEPA air filtration systems should be used to capture airborne mold spores during cleanup.
Cleaning Techniques:
- Common methods include HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing surfaces where mold is present.
- Antimicrobial agents may be used, but the focus is on physical removal.
5. Post-Remediation Evaluation
Final Inspection:
- After cleanup, a visual inspection ensures no visible mold remains.
- Air and surface tests may be conducted to confirm that mold levels are back to normal.
- It's crucial to check that the environment is dry to prevent mold from returning.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Detailed records of the remediation process, including testing results and cleanup procedures, should be maintained.
- This documentation is important for compliance and may be needed for insurance or legal matters.
6. Ongoing Prevention
- Educating building occupants about moisture control is vital. This includes maintaining HVAC systems, managing humidity, and promptly addressing leaks.
By adhering to the IICRC S520 standard, mold remediation professionals take a systematic and health-focused approach, ensuring that indoor spaces are restored to safe, mold-free conditions.

Green Bay schools seek $183 million referendum to update, fix buildings

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Jenna Paal’s voice echoed as she talked about the gymnasium at Beaumont Elementary School in Green Bay.
The gym doubles as the school’s lunchroom.
What You Need To Know
“It’s our gym, it’s our lunchroom and that drives a lot of our scheduling,” said Paal, who is the school’s principal. “We have to be strategic about when we can have those specials for kids and what does that learning look like in the classroom, then to work around those specials and ensure we’re able to use that space appropriately.”
“Specials” are activities like physical education class and mealtimes.
Paal said the joint gym-lunchroom is one of the areas that would be addressed if a $183 million referendum from Green Bay Area Public Schools is passed by voters on Nov. 5.
Beaumont was built in 1959. Despite changes and fixes over the years, school officials said it doesn’t meet some of the needs of students and staff.
That includes the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
“We focus a lot on the ADA aspects of the building. How do we service all students and give them an equal learning opportunity?” Paal said. “It goes from the switches on the doors to be able to let them come in, but also giving them opportunities in the classroom to be in the classroom and to be supported with what they need to be with their peers.”
District officials point to Beaumont as one of the schools that could see improvements if the referendum passes.
It will also pay for new bathrooms, improved security, gyms, kitchens, breakout areas, more classrooms and expanded special education areas at more than a dozen schools.
“Special education services we provide, counseling services, things like that those spaces weren’t allocated for at the time this building was constructed,” said Chief Operating Officer Cale Pulczinski.
In the case of Beaumont, why not just build a new school?
“That is a difficult balance. Would we all love to build brand new schools to get another 100 years out of them? Of course, but that’s just not realistic,” he said. “We’re trying to be responsible.”
At Beaumont — which is expected to see an increase in students with boundary changes — the referendum includes plans for a new commons and an updated kitchen.
“As you take a look around, there’s multiple areas in the school that just aren’t updated and haven’t been for years,” Paal said.
Donald Trump Supporters Boo Mention of Beyoncé at Green Bay Rally

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect an error in reporting on Beyoncé’s total career album sales.
A week after Beyoncé appeared at a rally for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in the singer’s hometown of Houston, the Democratic candidate’s rival Donald Trump still seemed focused on the 32-time Grammy winner’s full-throated endorsement of the sitting Vice President.
11/01/2024
Taking the stage in an orange and yellow safety vest on Wednesday (Oct. 30) in Green Bay, WI, the twice impeached former President told the crowd, “four nights ago they got Beyoncé… uhhhh Beyoncé,” as he paused while audience appeared to boo the singer who has sold tens of million of records as a solo act and with Destiny’s Child. “They got Beyoncé,” he sighed a second time. “We don’t need Beyoncé, we don’t need anybody… all you got is me, and I don’t have a guitar.”
The Harris campaign reposted the Beyoncé-bashing moment, which came on the same day that convicted felon Trump rolled out a bizarre attack on Pres. Joe Biden that found the former reality TV star climbing into a Trump-branded garbage truck and riding around in circles on an airport tarmac while wearing the vest. The stunt appeared to be the Trump campaign’s attempt to capitalize on a gaffe by Pres. Biden, who caused a stir on Tuesday night when he seemed to compare Trump’s supporters to garbage while commenting on a racist joke made at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally earlier this week in which the comedian compared Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage.”
The White House quickly tried to do damage control by clarifying that Biden was referring to the sexist, racist attacks launched by a series of speakers at Trump’s MSG rally on Sunday, not Trump’s supporters; the event also included an off-color joke by the same comedian that Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce could be the “next O.J. Simpson,” a remark that disgusted Swifties. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said in a video of his controversial remarks. “His, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”
The offensive comments at the Trump rally quickly resulted in a number of Puerto Rican born superstars endorsing Harris, including Bad Bunny, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez — whose parents were born on the island nation — as well as reggaetón legend Don Omar, who endorsed Harris on Tuesday. In addition, Nicky Jam rescinded his previous Trump endorsement on Wednesday and lined up behind Harris.
The Beyoncé mention at the rally where Trump once again vowed to the the “protector of women” — even, as he added, “whether the women like it or not” — was coupled with Trump bragging that “we don’t need Beyoncé.” Though the Harris campaign never said that the R&B legend would sing at the Houston event, Trump told the Green Bay crowd, “They said, ladies and gentlemen, they said Beyoncé’s coming to sing and she came but she didn’t sing. And then Kamala came on as Beyoncé was leaving without singing even one song and they booed the hell out of both of them”; there is no evidence supporting his claim that the 30,000-plus Harris supporters booed Beyoncé’s appearance.
“I’m not here as a celebrity,” Bey told the Houston audience in her introduction of Harris. “I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother. A mother who cares, deeply, about the world my children and all of our children live in. A world where we have the freedom to control our bodies. A world where we’re not divided. Our past, our present, our future merge to meet us here.”
Trump frequently denigrates A-listers who either don’t support him or who line up behind his rivals, and he continues to seem peeved at the many music stars who’ve endorsed Harris, an increasingly long roster that includes Bruce Springsteen, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Barbra Streisand, Cardi B, Charli XCX, Cher, Eminem, Katy Perry, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo and many more. Early on in Harris’ 11th-hour bid, Beyoncé gave her permission to use the 2016 track “Freedom” as the campaign’s theme song; the singer’s camp then sent a cease-and-desist to the Trump campaign in August after it used the song in a social media video that was later deleted from campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung’s X account.
And, after Taylor Swift endorsed Harris last month following what experts deemed the VP’s decisive win in the single debate Trump agreed to, the 78-year-old former President posted an all-caps response reading, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. —
Less than a week before Election Day, former President Donald Trump spoke at a rally in Green Bay wearing a bright orange safety vest, having arrived earlier at Green Bay's airport and jumping into a garbage truck.
"I have to begin by saying 250 million Americans are not garbage," he said in reference to a comment by President Joe Biden earlier in the week.
"The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters," Biden said. He was referring to a comedian at a Trump rally over the weekend who called Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage."
Biden took to social media Wednesday, and said his comments were directed at the comedian, saying "His demonization of Latinos was unconscionable."

— Matt Smith (@mattsmith_news) October 30, 2024
Trump began speaking at the rally at the Resch Center just after 6:15 p.m. and talked for over an hour, giving dark warnings on the economy and immigration.
"And I am hereby calling for the death penalty for any migrant that kills an American citizen or law enforcement officer."
He also went after Vice President Kamala Harris, where polls in the battleground states show a deadlock.
"Kamala Harris, a very low IQ individual, is running a campaign of hate, anger and retribution … But you're the worst vice president. You're the worst border czar. There's never been anybody bad like you," Trump said.
The event featured special guest speaker Brett Favre, former legendary quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
"It would be insane to give Kamala four more years in office. So it's time to bench Kamala and put in the star quarterback," Favre said.
Packers running back AJ Dillon was in the crowd as well.
Trump was in North Carolina earlier Wednesday before leaving for Green Bay.
The former president will hold a rally at Fiserv Forum on Friday night.
