What Tools Does Disaster Response Use for Water Damage Clean-Up?
We only use the best equipment! With our extensive experience in the Syracuse restoration industry, we've acquired state-of-the-art tools designed to tackle a wide range of challenges. This experience has also allowed our technicians to identify which type of equipment is best for a particular situation. Some of the most common water damage restoration tools we use include:
Infrared Cameras
Our infrared cameras give us the ability to see moisture in walls and ceilings that is not visible to the naked eye, almost like having "X-ray" vision. This capability allows us to detect and address trapped and hidden humidity, significantly reducing the risk of mold growth.
Moisture Meters
We use moisture meters to measure moisture levels in cellulose material. Before and after the drying process, we will conduct moisture readings in all areas of your property. If we detect moisture in an unaffected area of your building, we'll get to work quickly to dry it.
Air Movers
This equipment is designed to work in conjunction with our dehumidifiers. While our dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and convert it to a liquid, our Air Mover helps to circulate this moisture in the air so that the dehumidifier can effectively remove it.
Ozone Generators
These advanced tools enable us to cleanse affected surfaces and the air in a more effective manner. Ozone Generators work by causing oxygen molecules to implode, making them a valuable deodorization tool.
Xtreme Xtractor
This tool is great for tackling tough moisture after water damage. It allows us to apply direct pressure to a surface, like a carpet, that has soaked up water. The pressure helps draw out the water, making it easier to remove.
Top 3 Types of Water Damage You Should Know About
Water damage can strike without warning and can wreak havoc on your property, leaving you feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or an overflowing appliance, your property needs immediate water damage clean-up in Syracuse, NY, to prevent further harm. Here are the top three types of water damage you should know about:
Clean Water Damage
This type of water damage happens from a "clean" source, such as rainwater or a broken pipe in your home. It's easier to clean up than others on this list but can still cause extensive property damage when ignored.
Gray Water Damage
Gray water damage stems from appliances such as toilets without feces, washing machines, and dishwashers. Gray water sometimes contains bacteria and contaminants that can make you or your family sick.
Black Water Damage
The name alone indicates the severity of this type of water damage. It's caused by backed-up sewer lines, river flooding, and standing water that supports bacteria growth. Black water presents serious health hazards and needs to be handled by professional water damage contractors.
If you suspect your home or business has been damaged by one or more of the types of water above, take the following steps:
- Be Safe: Turn off all electricity running through your property. Don't go near or touch any water you believe to be contaminated.
- Stop the Source of Water: If you're able, put a stop to the water at its source. That way, you can prevent more damage.
- Call Disaster Response: Contact our water damage company ASAP for water restoration services. Our team is available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

At Disaster Response, we have refined our process over 40+ years of water damage clean-up experience. That way, we can provide customers with reliable, comprehensive service when they need it the most.
We utilize powerful pumps and vacuums to eliminate standing water from your property. Swift water removal is essential in minimizing damage and lowering the likelihood of mold growth. Our team is dedicated to ensuring efficient water extraction to prevent any additional complications.
After extracting water from your property, we dry and dehumidify the impacted areas. We use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to do so to eliminate moisture from walls, floors, and furniture. Proper drying helps prevent warping, swelling, and the growth of mold.
Whenever we deal with water damage, we have to address the potential contaminants and bacteria that can enter your home. We make sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas to create a safe living environment. This involves cleaning carpets, upholstery, and personal belongings. Our technicians also use antimicrobial treatments to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
The final step in the process is the restoration of your home to its pre-damage condition. This comprehensive restoration process may encompass a range of tasks, from minor repairs such as replacing drywall and installing new carpeting to major reconstruction efforts. Rest assured that Disaster Response is fully equipped to manage all aspects of water damage restoration, from start to finish.
- Maintenance: Have your business or home's roof, appliances, and plumbing inspected by professionals to spot early signs of wear and tear.
- Water Alarms: If there is a flood or leak in your home, a water alarm can alert you so that you can take action immediately.
- Drainage: Your home needs proper drainage systems in place at all times. To prevent water buildup, be sure to unclog your downspouts and gutters.
- Cracks and Gaps: Be sure to seal up any cracks and gaps in your property's foundation to limit water from getting inside.

The ACC has been a far more competitive conference than many thought coming into the season, and a big reason for this is the emergence of the two teams in this matchup.
The Virginia Tech Hokies (5-2) take their three-game win streak on the road, where the Syracuse Orange (5-2) will be waiting in desperate need of a bounce-back effort.
The game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. ET and can be streamed live on The CW.
Virginia Tech started the season off on the wrong foot with an upset loss to Vanderbilt. However, the Hokies have since found their footing, winning by double-digits against Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Stanford over the past three weeks.
However, the Orange presents a unique challenge for a relatively untested secondary.
Speaking of the Orange, they are glad to be home after a rough showing against Pittsburgh. Quarterback Kyle McCord turned from an orange to a pumpkin as he threw five interceptions in the loss.
The Hokies are 4-point favorites with a 53.5-point over/under.
Will the Hokies continue winning, or will the Orange bounce back at home? Perhaps both could happen in our angle for this matchup. Let's dive in for my Virginia Tech vs Syracuse prediction and college football picks for this NCAAF Week 10 matchup.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs Syracuse Orange College Football Game Preview
The Hokies' offense has been dynamic since Kyron Drones took the reins in 2023. The dual-threat quarterback can beat defenses through the air or on the ground.
We should see him lead the Hokies' offense to success in both facets, as the Syracuse defense has struggled to get off the field. The Orange come into this matchup ranked 108th nationally in yards per rush allowed and 129th in opponent completion percentage.
The struggles against the rush will be evident against Virginia Tech, as the Hokies have run the ball at the 28th-highest rate in the country. Much of that ground-and-pound damage will come from running back Bhayshul Tuten.
Tuten has been a machine on the ground, averaging 6.7 yards per carry and reaching paydirt 12 times already. It should be noted that Tuten is questionable for this matchup at the time of writing, but he returned to practice on Wednesday, so he is trending in the right direction.
However, the Hokies' offensive success in this matchup will not be limited to the ground. We went over the high number of completions that Syracuse has allowed, but they also rank 70th nationally in yards per pass allowed, which culminates in a rank of 112th in Pass Success Rate allowed.
I touched upon Kyle McCord's struggles in the open, but given how much he's thrived in this system, I'm considering last week an outlier performance.
McCord has led an elite passing attack. The Orange rank 16th nationally in Pass Success Rate despite throwing the ball at the second-highest rate.
On paper, the Hokies look to be a tough matchup for McCord and company, as they rank ninth in opponent completion percentage allowed and 49th in yards per pass allowed.
Still, Virginia Tech's secondary has been largely untested.
Just 44% of the plays ran against the Hokies have been passed, and the last elite passing attack they faced, the Miami Hurricanes, torched them for 343 yards and four scores through the air.
Another notch against the Hokies secondary is their Pro Football Focus Coverage grade. They enter this matchup ranked 107th nationally, suggesting they have been fortunate not to have allowed more through the air.
This will all help Syracuse look strong in his matchup and help them match the Hokies on the scoreboard.

This total may look suspicious initially, but getting it under the key number 54 is excellent.
We've seen both teams involved in high-scoring matchups, and both offenses profile for success in this one.
The key to this overcoming will be the efficiency of the Syracuse offense. The Hokies will put points on the board but can be more methodical on the ground. It will be up to McCord to strike back relatively quickly through the air.
Pick: Over 54 (-110, bet365)

After a long stint on the road, ending in a disappointing loss to Pitt, Syracuse returns to the Dome for Homecoming against Virginia Tech. The Orange will be out for payback after a tough 38-10 loss to the Hokies on the road in 2023. Virginia Tech has won three in a row after their 21-6 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday.
The Orange are still 5-2 on the season, but Kyle McCord is coming off his toughest loss of the year so far after throwing a season-high five interceptions against the No. 19-ranked Panthers. Still, McCord threw for over 300 yards for his seventh straight game and climbed into the Orange’s Top 10 for all-time season passer rating.
Pittsburgh deployed the perfect formula to shut down the Syracuse offense last week, prompting some observers to question whether the secret is out on slowing down the Orange. But Fran Brown doesn’t think so.
“We don’t want the same thing to happen,” Brown said, but chalked the loss up to a blip. “I think our quarterback is really good. It was an off-night. It was an off-night for our entire football program.”

Syracuse, N.Y., Faces Renewed Lead Water Crisis Amid Testing Controversies

Syracuse, N.Y., is once again under the spotlight as the city grapples with elevated lead levels in its drinking water. Earlier this year, tests revealed that 10% of surveyed homes had lead concentrations exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) threshold by more than four times, surpassing levels seen during the Flint, Michigan crisis a decade ago.
Source: CBS News/YouTube
City officials initially assured residents that the tap water was safe. However, Thursday’s announcement disclosed that some of the initial tests were improperly conducted. The contamination findings from August showed lead levels over 250 times the new EPA action level, reaching up to 2,520 parts per billion (ppb). After retesting 24 affected homes, only two remained above the EPA limit, prompting the suspension of two water department employees involved in the flawed testing.
Mayor Ben Walsh maintained that the majority of water samples were safe, citing historical data. Yet, environmental advocates and residents remain skeptical. Valerie Baron from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) emphasized that improper sampling does not guarantee water safety, highlighting ongoing concerns about Syracuse’s approximately 14,000 lead pipes.
The city is actively addressing the issue with plans to replace over 3,000 lead service lines in the coming year, supported by nearly $22.8 million from the bipartisan infrastructure law. Despite these efforts, confusion persists among residents about the testing process and the true safety of their water supply.
Health experts warn that there is no safe level of lead exposure, which can cause irreversible cognitive damage, particularly in children. The situation in Syracuse echoes the Flint crisis, where inadequate corrosion control led to widespread lead contamination affecting nearly 100,000 residents.
As Syracuse continues its efforts to eliminate lead pipes and restore public trust, the incident underscores the critical need for accurate water testing and robust infrastructure improvements to ensure safe drinking water for all communities.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse’s annual downtown Christmas tree lighting will feature many of the same traditions and participants, but there will be one notable absence.
Mayor Ben Walsh on Monday announced details of this year’s holiday-season event, set to take place 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, in Clinton Square.
The entertainment headliner will once again be Sydney Irving, an indie/pop rock artist from Syracuse who was named the 2020 Young Adult Artist of the Year by the International Singer Songwriters Association. Local band TrumpTight315 is also set to perform.
Walsh said the tree lighting itself will happen around 7 p.m., but for the first time in his seven years as mayor, he‘s not going to be there to help flip the switch. He’ll be out of town at his daughter’s dance competition.
Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens will fill in this year, and she’ll be getting help some from local youth. The city is once again holding an art competition to select children who will assist with the tree lighting.
The contest is open to children ages 4 to 18. Winners from each of five age divisions will assist with the tree lighting.
To enter the contest, children should make a free drawing that reflects the theme “Holidays at Home.” Take a photo of the drawing and email it to ParksYouthRecreation@syr.gov by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15. Include name, age, school, parent name, phone number and email address with the submission.
A new opportunity for young people this year is a mailbox to collect letters for Santa that will be stationed near the tree. Walsh said he has confirmed that Santa will respond to letters that include the child’s return address, first name and last initial, two to three holiday wishes, their favorite thing about Syracuse for the holiday season and the name of their parents or guardians.
Weather permitting, visitors will also be able to ice skate at the Clinton Square outdoor rink for the first time that night, with extended hours until 9:30 p.m.
Crews were starting to install the 42-foot tall artificial tree on Monday morning. It features more than 10,000 multi-color LED lights and 400 branches.
