CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Monday marks the first day of early voting in South Carolina, so Charleston County voters can now cast their ballots at any of the seven different early voting locations.
Over 100,000 early voters are expected in Charleston County alone, which would be record-high numbers amid a recent law change, according to the Executive Director of the Charleston County Board of Elections, Issac Cramer.
“We do anticipate early voting to break records for Charleston County because of the excitement in the voters. They want to cast their ballots, it’s a presidential election, and also [for] the convenience,” Cramer says.
In 2022, the Early Voters Bill passed allowing early voters to cast their ballots without a reason, making this the first major election that the law will be in effect. Only a valid photo ID is required to check in.
“The Early Voters Bill that passed in 2022 gives all voters in Charleston County the ability to cast their ballot without an excuse, in person, early… We are trying to get the message out that they don’t need a reason anymore. If they just want to vote early, they can,” Cramer says.
Acceptable forms of photo ID include a South Carolina driver’s license, a South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles ID Card, a South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit, a South Carolina voter registration card with photo, a United States military ID and a United States passport.
Cramer encourages people to vote early because it’s the easier option since voters get to choose the location, time and date that they would like to vote, rather than being constricted to 12 hours on election day and only going to an assigned polling place.
“We’ve got a lot of great feedback about our vote centers across the county, and we want our voters to know that they can vote at an accessible location, we offer curbside at every one,” Cramer says.
Early voting is open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and will last until Nov. 2. CARTA will not be offering free rides to the polls during early voting, but they will be on election day.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- The 2024 general election is quickly approaching, but South Carolina voters will not have to wait until Election Day to cast a ballot.
Governor Henry McMaster signed a law in May 2022 that replaces in-person absentee voting with an early in-person voting period for the two weeks leading up to election days.
Any registered voter, including those who will be 18 years old by the Nov. 5 general election, can cast a ballot during the early voting period without an excuse.
“Early voting provides a convenient and secure way for you to cast your ballot,” said Howie Knapp, the executive director of the South Carolina Election Commission. “Find an early voting center in your county, vote just like you would at your polling place on Election Day, and have your voice heard.”
Early voting for the 2024 election begins on Monday, October 21, and ends on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Here’s what voters need to know:
The ballot will include seven candidates for president, according to officials:
An eighth candidate — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — was initially nominated by the South Carolina Alliance Party. However, party leaders withdrew him from the ballot in August after he suspended his presidential campaign.
Additionally, each of South Carolina’s seven U.S. House of Representatives seats is up for election.
All 170 seats in the South Carolina state legislature — 124 in the House and 46 in the Senate — are also up for grabs this year. Some are uncontested, however.
Some ballots will also include races for county sheriff, circuit solicitor, probate judge, coroner, school board, and other countywide and local races.
Voters can find out who is on the ballot where they live by obtaining a sample ballot from the South Carolina Election Commission.
South Carolina adopted new state legislative district maps in December 2021 following the 2020 U.S. Census. Some district lines were redrawn, new districts were created, and some districts were eliminated.
Voters can find out which district they live in on the South Carolina legislature’s website.
Each county in South Carolina is required to have at least one polling location open for early voting. Some larger counties may have multiple open locations while smaller counties may have just one early voting site.
Early voting centers are open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the early voting period. Early voting is not available on Sunday, Oct. 27.

A valid photo ID is required to vote in South Carolina elections, including during the early voting period. Acceptable forms of identification include:
State law requires an individual to register to vote at least 30 days before an election.
The deadline to register for the 2024 election is Monday, Oct. 14.
There are several ways you can register to vote in South Carolina:
1 – South Carolinians can register online by visiting scvotes.gov before midnight on Oct. 14. You will need your South Carolina Driver’s License or DMV ID card.
2 – Download a voter registration form from scvotes.gov. Complete and return the form to your county voter registration office either by fax or email before midnight on Oct. 14, or by mail – but it must be postmarked by Oct. 14.
3 – Register in person at your county voter registration office. Remember: most offices close at 5 p.m. for in-office registration.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - City of North Charleston leaders are asking for the public’s voice on more affordable housing in the area.
North Charleston’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan states over 17,000 households spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs in 2017. This means 44% of the city households were cost-burdened.
City leaders will look at a Unified Development Ordinance to combat the need for more affordable housing. This means leaders are reviewing different city codes such as zoning, subdivision regulations and design standards all at once. While codes have been amended over the years, this will be the first time codes are reviewed across the board since their adoption back in 1976.
Adam MacConnell, the project manager for the city, says the plan is to streamline the process for more development for current and future residents. The ordinance finds barriers to affordable housing by looking at topics such as housing cost policies, increasing the supply of homes and transportation locations. MacConnell says this work is just one part of the region’s efforts to get over housing barriers for many.
“A lot of our challenges that we face are regional in nature, housing, transportation, flooding and it’s going to take an all hands on deck approach,” MacConnell says. “That means the city of North Charleston, our neighboring jurisdictions, the counties, the nonprofits sector and the private sector to help solve some of these issues going forward.”
City leaders are looking at the federal Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing grant to get the initiative started. The grant supports communities that have higher demands for accessible housing than what is available. Leaders are applying for one million dollars in funding towards consulting to get the initiative started. That funding requires the input of residents in the area.
Residents are invited to share their comments on where housing is needed. MacConnell says there will be boards, surveys and documents that guests can take part in.
Anyone interested in commenting in person can visit the public hearing at City Hall before the committee of the whole meeting beginning at 5 p.m.

This new location marks a significant step in the organization’s bold mission to provide comprehensive, personalized care for seniors in the community, allowing them to live independently at home while receiving medical and supportive services. The Charleston center officially opens its doors today and is now welcoming participants.
BoldAge designs its PACE programs to deliver holistic care through an integrated team of health professionals, ensuring that participants receive the medical, social and emotional support they need. The Charleston site will serve a growing senior population, providing access to primary care, physical therapy, home care, nutrition services and social activities – all under one roof. The custom-designed center is located at 2801 Ashley Phosphate Road, and BoldAge will provide transportation services to the building for participants.
