Polls close in Connecticut

There has been a high turnout and steady flow at Connecticut’s polling sites.

Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas provided updates on Election Day at 11 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8 p.m.

At 11 a.m., Thomas said that overall, it had been pretty smooth.

A few towns had minor tabulator issues that were resolved within minutes. Thomas said that was to be expected.

At 4:30 p.m., Thomas said they were seeing long lines for same-day registration.

She says part of the problem has been college students who thought they were registered in other states now trying to vote in Connecticut at the last minute.

As of 7 p.m., 15,000 people used same-day registration.

“We’ve been working with some of our volunteer attorneys to see if they’re available to assist the registrars should they need help,” Thomas said.

She also said a person was arrested at a voting location in East Lyme.

Police in East Lyme say 61-year-old David Godbout is charged with disorderly conduct after harassing town employees.

Police say he was arguing with a female high school student who was holding a sign about reproductive rights at the high school.

He then allegedly went into the community center where he would not show his ID and verbally attacked election officials and State Senator Martha Marx.

State house candidate Nick Menapace had to step in.

That was the most significant issue at the state’s polling sites today.

Other issues relating to tabulators have come up, but she says the state has not seen some of the more nefarious things that are being reported in other states.

“We’ve received many, many calls when one of the tabulators go down because people are suspicious about the auxiliary bin, but of course, that’s part of Connecticut’s regulations. That’s how ballots should be treated,” she said.

More than 740,000 Connecticut residents already cast their ballots during the state’s early voting period.

Same-day registration

Voters on Tuesday had the option of same-day registration if they were not previously registered.

Same-day registration allows for people who are not yet registered or who are registered in one town, but have moved to another town to register and vote on Election Day, according to the Office of the Secretary of the State.

For Election Day, the same-day registration location will be different than your polling location.

Early voting

More than 740,000 people in Connecticut came out and voted early - that's about 30 percent of registered voters in the state.

Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas said a few towns saw over 17,000 early voters each. Those towns include Norwalk, Stamford and West Hartford.

Ballots for anyone who voted early were able to counted starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Absentee ballots

Absentee ballots were able to be counted beginning at 10 a.m.

As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, more than 120,000 absentee ballots have been returned so far, which is about 37 percent of eligible voters, Thomas said.

Any absentee ballots needed to get to the town clerk by 8 p.m.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The Town of West Hartford is gearing up for Veterans Day, with volunteers being sought to place American flags on veteran graves next weekend.

That effort on Saturday, Nov. 9, will be followed up with the town's annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, the actual holiday.

Meanwhile, volunteers are needed to help place American flags on veteran graves at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Ave., on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 8:30 a.m.

"Each year, West Hartford takes great pride in celebrating our veterans with a flag-planting event on the Saturday before Veterans Day," wrote the Town of West Hartford in an announcement.

There are more than 1,200 military graves in Fairview Cemetery and volunteers from the community are asked to assist the American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96 in placing flags to honor their service to the United States.

Volunteers are asked to assemble at the cemetery management area at 8:30 a.m. for instructions on the proper placement of flags and an assignment of a cemetery area.

Everyone is welcome and there is no need to RSVP.

To assist in the placement of a flag, bring a screwdriver to prepare a hole in the ground.

Proper Grave Marking

Anyone who has a relative or friend buried at Fairview Cemetery whose grave is not properly identified as that of a veteran should contact the cemetery office.

Veterans Day Ceremony

The American Legion Post 96 and the Town of West Hartford will host a brief Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11.

It will take place at 11 a.m. at the Connecticut Veterans Memorial located on the corner of North Main Street and Farmington Avenue, West Hartford Center.

The keynote speaker is LaToya Fernandez, a local educator, activist and community leader.

If the weather is inclement, the ceremony will be relocated indoors in the community room at the West Hartford Town Hall Auditorium, 50 S. Main St.

Collecting Retired Flags

Hayes-Velhage Post 96 will also be collecting any American flag that needs to be retired.

An American flag, when no longer in use, is retired at a ceremony where the flag is burned.

Flags will be collected from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.

When a patient arrives at an OnMed Care Station location, the door will be open if the station is available. No appointments are necessary and anyone seeking medical care may walk in. Some of the technology used in the station includes fogged glass for patient privacy, high-definition cameras, a heat camera with thermal imaging to check a patient's temperature, a blood pressure cuff, a pulse oximeter and a stethoscope for a medical expert to listen to a patient's heart and lungs. The station is also self-cleaning, using spray, air filtration and UV lights to clean itself after each patient's visit.

The station can detect infections, respiratory illnesses, heartburn, allergies and headaches, according to Hartford HealthCare's website. Patients can also get an examination of their ears, eyes and throat and receive a diagnosis and treatment plan.

"You can think of it almost like a clinic in a box," Hartford HealthCare's Chief Integration Officer Debra Hayes said. "A typical visit includes everything that a patient would expect at a typical doctor's office visit." She added that the stations can address about 85% of "what you get at a typical primary care visit."

Connecticut is one of five states with OnMed Care Stations that are currently live and available for patients to use, according to OnMed's map of its station sites on its website. There are two stations that are live in Connecticut, one at Stop & Shop in Killingly and one at The Village for Families and Children in Hartford.

The medical insurance policies for each location are different based off each "community's needs," Hayes said. For Hartford's OnMed Care Station, insurance is accepted but not required. In Killingly, insurance is required and the station accepts all major insurance.

Patients will receive a symptom assessment, diagnosis and a treatment plan at the end of their OnMed Care Station visits. For any necessary medications, patients can also receive a e-prescription from the station's medical experts. A typical OnMed Care Station visit is around 15 to 20 minutes, Hayes said.

The care station locations were also selected so that patients could easily get their prescriptions filled at Stop & Shop or The Village.

"Think of it like one step above sitting at your kitchen table and doing a virtual visit," Hayes said. "It really does enable the provider to make a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan."

Hayes said that OnMed Care Stations can help deliver immediate post-acute care services to patients that are two years or older in a "lower cost setting."

"We took a multifaceted approach to identifying where we were going to locate these care stations," Hayes said. "Hartford HealthCare is always looking to expand access, but we also want to tailor it to the needs of the community."

Hayes added that Hartford HealthCare and OnMed are "still working" on their plans to open a third care station in Connecticut.

"We want to make sure we put it in a community that can truly benefit from additional access to affordable quality healthcare," she said.

Hayes said Hartford HealthCare and OnMed partnered on creating care stations in Connecticut because they "share the same mission" of "ensuring everyone has access to the care that they need."

"We're always looking for innovative, alternative and affordable options for patients to access the care they need when they need it," Hayes said. "The partnership with OnMed really does allow us to do just that, to provide our patients and the members of the communities we serve with an alternative that meets the patients where they are so they can get the care they need."
