Last season was arguably the best in the history of the program, featuring a national championship game appearance, a national player of the year in Zach Edey, a Big Ten title, and five weeks spent as the No. 1 team in the country.
Tonight, with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi invading Mackey Arena, an exciting new chapter begins for the Boilermakers. Most teams would probably be in for some lean times following the departure of maybe the greatest player in program history, but Purdue coach Matt Painter has spent two years preparing for this eventuality and appears ready to weather the loss of Edey and keep the Boilermakers near the top of the Big Ten.
With Braden Smith running the show and embracing a bigger role in the scoring column, Trey Kaufman-Renn poised to be one of the Big Ten's premier big men and Fletcher Loyer rounding into a true three-levels scorer, the Boilermakers need only for their relatively inexperienced supporting cast to hold up its end of the bargain to once again be on the short list for a top 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Luckily for Purdue, that supporting seems be ready for its turn in the limelight. After an offseason spent assuming last year's March Madness darlings, Cam Heide and Myles Colvin would likely start and play defining roles this season, it appears they will be relegated to the bench again in favor of freshmen wings Gicarri Harris and CJ Cox, both of whom appear physically ready to handle the rigors of the Big Ten and provide the shooting and on-ball defensive prowess necessary to thrive in Painter's system. Cox in particular seems set to play a much larger role than was expected this summer – the 6-foot-2 combo guard, who had no high-major scholarship offers other than Purdue, might well reprise the role Lance Jones played last season.
In the paint, the Boilermakers have a wealth of options and much will depend on who gels the best with Kaufman-Renn, who will play power forward for the second straight season after starting his career as a center. Freshman Daniel Jacobsen, an extremely exciting rim protector who stands 7-3, seems to be in the driver's seat to start next to Kaufman-Renn, with Fort Wayne native Caleb Furst and 7-2 Will Berg likely to provide depth. It is also notable that Purdue will not redshirt 6-11 freshman Raleigh Burgess this season, suggesting he could force his way into minutes, as well. It's best to view these first few weeks of the season as live tryouts for minutes at center. All four options could well see the floor tonight.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a season in which it went 21-12 and finished second in the Southland Conference. It was the Islanders' first season under coach Jim Shaw, who replaced former Purdue assistant coach Steve Lutz after Lutz departed to take the head coaching job at Western Kentucky.
Shaw constructed a team that ranked 23rd in in opponent field-goal percentage last season and returns its top three scorers in 6-7 forward Garry Clark, 6-3 guard Dian Wright-Forde and 6-4 guard Jordan Roberts.
It is best to think of this game as not only the start of the 2024-25 season but as the beginning of a two-season journey that the Boilermakers believe could end in a national title. This is a reloading season and the youngsters will gain experience as the season goes on, potentially culminating in an eye-opening run to the NCAA Tournament's second weekend. Next season, nearly every key player on this roster could be back to make a run at the program's first national title. The growth process for this iteration of the Boilermakers begins in earnest tonight and could well culminate in April 2026.

A majority of voters opposed CCISD's $135.4 million bond proposal.
If approved, the bond package would fund a new consolidated Yeager Elementary School, a renovated and consolidated Houston Elementary School, fine arts improvements and additions and improvements to Haas Middle School and King, Moody and Veterans Memorial high schools.
But according to complete and unofficial returns, 61.90%, or 42,975 votes, were cast against the measure.

As expected the Boilermakers are a big favorite over the Islanders, who play in the Southland Conference and went 21-12 a year ago. According to the FanDuel.com gambling website, Purdue is a 22.5-point favorite and the over/under is 145.5.
Purdue finished 23-15-1 against the spread a year ago, and won and covered five straight NCAA Tournament games before losing to Connecticut in the national championship game.
We are all well aware that this is a different Purdue team, of course, without 7-foot-4 Zach Edey, the two-time national player of the year who's now in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies. But these Boilermakers are also still very good, with a lot of returning starters and a bevy of young talent.
Paying attention to what the Boilermakers did in the nonconference season a year ago might have some bearing on what this season might be like. They were 9-2 against the spread and won all 11 games outside Big Ten play.
That's impressive.
Betting the Boilermakers even with big numbers is still usually a good thing. They were favored by 20 points or more four times last year, and won AND covered in all four games against Samford, Morehead State, Texas Southern and Jacksonville.
These two teams played in the 2006-07 season and Purdue won 79-61 as a 17.5-point favorite.

A FEW THINGS ABOUT PURDUE
• Purdue is retooling a bit after losing two-time Player-of-the-Year, but has an excellent three-man core to build around in juniors Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn. Smith is the preseason Big Ten Player-of-the-Year.
• The Boilermakers were picked as the preseason favorite to win the newly expanded Big Ten. It would be their third title in as many years.
• Purdue lost a charity exhibition at Creighton and won a preseason game vs. Grand Valley State before this opener.
• Purdue hasn’t lost a November game since 2020 a run of 21 straight wins.
ABOUT THIS GAME
• This game was originally by former Purdue assistant coach Steve Lutz for last season after he left West Lafayette to coach the Islanders, but he left for Western Kentucky after a season and is now at Oklahoma State. It was postponed a year after Corpus Christi’s coaching change. Lutz’s daughter, Caroline, is a student at Purdue, part of the reason he wanted to play the game.
• Corpus Christi won 21 games last season under new coach Jim Shaw, who was previously on Lutz’s staff.
• Forward Owen Dease is an Evansville native who was a grassroots teammate of Purdue’s Fletcher Loyer with the Indy Heat program. Dease, a redshirt junior, averaged seven points last season.
Center Shilo Jackson is an Indianapolis native who attended junior college at Vincennes.
• Forward Garry Clark returns after averaging a team-best 13.2 points and 8.1 rebounds last season
