The Royal Oak Public Library posted to social media Saturday evening, announcing it was closing temporarily because of bugs that stowed in a DVD case entering the building after being placed in the book drop.
UPDATE:Royal Oak Public Library to reopen Monday after given all clear of bugs
The post reads: "Bugs entered the library in items in our book drop. Until we can identify and remediate the problem, we will remain closed."
Library Director Sandy Irwin said that employees were sorting items that came in from the book drop on Saturday when one of them opened a DVD case and bugs crawled — and flew — out of it. Irwin noted that the employees identified multiple species of bug.
While library staff quickly tied everything up in bags and stored it in an isolated garage, Irwin said she chose to close the library out of an abundance of caution so pest control experts can diagnose and treat the issue correctly, especially with multiple species crawling about.
"Let's protect the staff, the library's materials, and the things we borrow from other libraries," Irwin said. "I'm a librarian, not a pest control professional, but I will look up 1,000 types of bugs."

Irwin said experts could not be on the scene until Monday. After a professional opinion, the library will set a timeline to open again.
